Chapter 2 - The Intercepted File

The transition from the public gala to the private executive suite on the sixty-fourth floor of the Cross Tower was executed with military precision.
Within ten minutes of Martin Vance's entrance, Gabriel’s tactical team had cleared the private corridors, ushered my boys into an adjoining lounge stocked with fresh fruit and juices, and posted four armed guards outside the soundproof mahogany doors.
Liam, Lucas, and Noah were fascinated by the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline, pressing their palms against the floor-to-ceiling glass, completely unaware of the storm brewing in the room next door.
Inside the boardroom, the air was suffocating.
Gabriel stood by the fireplace, his tuxedo jacket discarded on a leather chair, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. Across the glass table sat Serena Vale, her hands trembling as two federal-grade digital forensic analysts decrypted her personal phone and tablet under Martin Vance’s supervision.
"Explain the transaction, Vance," Gabriel commanded without turning around, his eyes fixed on the rain streaking the glass.
"Five years ago, two weeks after Mrs. Cross signed the uncontested divorce papers," Martin explained, projecting the decrypted logs onto the boardroom display, "she attended a private prenatal clinic in Boston. The clinic was owned by a healthcare subsidiary managed by the Vale family."
My stomach clenched. I remembered that cold clinic in Boston. I remembered the receptionist asking me to verify my emergency contacts, and how I had left the father’s section blank.
"The ultrasound flagged three heartbeats," Martin continued. "The attending physician immediately contacted Julian Vale—Serena’s father and the managing director of Vale Logistics. Within twenty-four hours, the medical file was permanently expunged from the state digital registry. Serena personally authorized a wire transfer of five hundred thousand dollars to the physician's offshore account in the Caymans to falsify a miscarriage report."
Gabriel turned around slowly. His face was devoid of color, his eyes burning with an unholy, lethal clarity.
"You faked a death certificate for my children?" Gabriel whispered.
"You would have gone back to her!" Serena screamed, jumping up from her chair, her mask of society elegance completely shattering. "You never loved me, Gabriel! For two years, you slept in the guest room! You looked at her picture every night! If you knew she was carrying three heirs, you would have dragged her back to Westchester and locked me out of the family forever!"
"You were never in my family, Serena," Gabriel said, not once raising his voice.
"I protected your empire!" she sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at the screen. "My father gave your logistics firm access to the northern ports! We gave you the contracts!"
"No," Martin Vance interjected calmly, sliding a second file across the glass. "Your father didn't give Gabriel those contracts. He stole them from Claire's late father fifteen years ago. And the two million dollars used to pay off the doctors came directly from Gabriel’s corporate payroll."
Gabriel walked to the table, looking down at the woman he had chosen over me.

"Marcus," Gabriel spoke into his collar mic. "Detain Julian Vale at the port. Freeze every account bearing the Vale name. And notify the district attorney that the Cross family is surrendering all corporate protection for Vale Logistics."
Serena collapsed back into the chair, weeping into her palms as the realization hit her: the empire she had stolen my place to secure had just been demolished with a single keystroke.
