Chapter 5: The Sanctuary in the Woods
The armored van drove for three hours, navigating a complex web of backroads before finally pulling through the heavy iron gates of a secluded estate deep in the Adirondack Mountains. The property was a fortress—a sprawling, modern compound constructed of reinforced concrete, bulletproof glass, and surrounded by a perimeter of high-tech thermal cameras.
Alexander carried Chloe into the master bedroom, where a private team of loyal physicians was already waiting to evaluate her and the baby.
For the next three days, Chloe was confined to bed rest. Alexander’s doctors tended to her stitches, managed her pain, and ensured the baby—whom Chloe officially named Ethan—gained the weight he had lost during his premature birth. Alexander visited her every evening, always bringing a fresh cup of herbal tea and a detailed report on the Sterling family's movements.
"Julian is furious," Alexander said on the fourth night, pulling a chair up to her bedside. The dim firelight cast long shadows across his rugged face. "He held a press conference yesterday, claiming you suffered a mental breakdown and fled with the baby to escape criminal charges. He’s offered a one-million-dollar reward for your location."
Chloe looked up from nursing Ethan, her jaw tightening. "Let him search. He doesn't know about the trust yet, does he?"
"No," Alexander smiled faintly. "Victoria thinks she's just dealing with a disobedient girl. She has no idea that my legal team filed the original Aurora Mine inheritance claim with the high court in Zurich this morning. The moment the judge reviews your DNA match and Ethan’s birth certificate, the Sterling family’s access to their primary diamond supply will be frozen."

"How did you know my mother, Alexander?" Chloe asked softly, looking at the silver locket resting on her nightstand. "Why are you risking your life and your billion-dollar empire for me?"
Alexander looked into the fire, a flash of profound, lingering sorrow darkening his eyes. "Your mother was the only woman I ever loved, Chloe. We were engaged to be married before Grayson Sterling—Julian's father—framed me for corporate fraud and forced me out of the country. I couldn't save your mother from them back then. But I swear on my life, I will save her daughter."
