Chapter 9 - The Price They Had to Pay

My parents lost everything after the trial.
The story went viral locally. Their neighbors stopped speaking to them. My father’s business suffered. My mother was asked to step down from the charity board she had been on for fifteen years.
They tried to sell their house, but no one wanted to buy a home where a pregnant woman had been assaulted and lost her baby.
Eventually, they moved out of state.
I didn’t know where they went, and I didn’t care.
Madison wrote to them from prison every month. They visited her when they could afford the gas.
