Chapter 10 - We Learned to Breathe Again

Two years later, Ethan and I stood in front of the cherry tree in our backyard.

I was twenty weeks pregnant.

This time, we had told almost no one. We had been careful. We had been quiet. We had protected this pregnancy like it was the most fragile and precious thing in the world — because it was.

Ethan rested his hand gently on my growing belly.

“Do you think it’s a girl or a boy?” he asked.

I smiled.

“I don’t care,” I said. “As long as it’s healthy. As long as it’s safe.”

He kissed my temple.

“It will be,” he promised. “Because this time, no one is getting close enough to hurt either of you.”

I looked at the cherry tree, now taller and stronger than when we planted it. The onesie was long gone, buried beneath the roots.

I still thought about the baby we lost. I probably always would. But the pain had softened into something gentler — a quiet sadness instead of a sharp wound.

Ethan took my hand.

“Ready to go inside?” he asked.

I nodded.

We walked back toward the house together — the one we had filled with new memories. The one where I no longer flinched at sudden movements. The one where I could finally sleep through the night without seeing Madison’s face.

I was no longer the invisible daughter.

I was no longer the sister who had to stay quiet.

I was Emily Carter — a woman who had lost everything and somehow found the strength to build something better.

And as I stepped through the back door, Ethan’s hand warm in mine and our baby moving gently inside me, I realized something simple but true.

I had died on that living room floor two years ago.

But I had come back stronger.

And this time, nobody was going to take what was mine ever again.
