Chapter 3 - The Lakefront Confrontation

The Lake Michigan property was a sprawling, three-story glass-and-stone mansion sitting on a private bluff overlooking the gray, churning waters of the lake.
At 7:00 p.m., the paved circular driveway was packed with luxury SUVs, BMWs, and sports cars. Inside the floor-to-ceiling living room, a private catering crew poured vintage champagne for thirty high-level commercial developers, corporate attorneys, and local city planners who had gathered to celebrate the closing of the highway logistics corridor.
Brandon stood near the stone fireplace, wearing a tailored navy suit, holding a crystal glass, his arm wrapped around Courtney, who wore a champagne-colored silk dress.
"To the future of Whitaker Capital!" Brandon’s senior partner announced, raising his glass. "And to the seamless acquisition of the Cleveland corridor!"
The crowd clapped, their laughter echoing off the high cedar beams.
Before Brandon could take a sip, the heavy, double glass front doors of the mansion were pushed open.
The cold lake wind swept into the warm room, bringing with it the sharp scent of damp earth and rain.
I walked into the center of the marble foyer. I didn't wear a designer dress or diamonds. I wore my simple, dark wool winter coat, my eye patch sitting square over my left eye, my posture straight as a steel pillar. Beside me walked Sophie, carrying the navy-blue folder, flanked by Martin Vance—a senior federal prosecutor for financial fraud—and two uniformed county deputies.
The music stopped instantly. The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Courtney’s champagne glass froze mid-air, her face turning a sickly, translucent green as she stared at my eye patch.

"Mom?" Brandon stammered, taking a sharp, awkward step back from the fireplace, his hand trembling so violently that wine spilled onto his cream-colored rug. "What... what are you doing here? You can't be here! This is a private corporate function!"
"I'm here to review the title on the Cleveland parcel, Brandon," I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal authority that echoed clearly through the vaulted room.
