Chapter 4 - The Demolition of Brandon Whitaker

Martin Vance stepped forward, opening a leather portfolio and laying three court-certified documents flat on the glass display table in front of Brandon’s corporate partners.

"Effective at 5:00 p.m. today, the Federal District Court of Ohio has issued an emergency, system-wide asset freeze on all accounts associated with Whitaker Capital and the Delaware LLC," Martin announced to the silent, stunned crowd of developers. "Furthermore, a grand jury has officially unsealed an indictment for corporate forgery, elder financial exploitation, and grand larceny involving the estate of Paul Whitaker."

"This is an absolute misunderstanding!" Courtney shrieked, her silk dress rustling as she rushed toward her husband. "Elaine is confused! She has severe visual impairment and memory loss! She signed those land transfers eight years ago!"

"I didn't sign anything, Courtney," I said, stepping closer to the glass table. "The forensic document examiner verified this morning that my signature on the 2018 deed was a digital copy lifted from my husband's death certificate."

A collective, horrified gasp went up from the developers in the room. Brandon’s senior managing partner stepped back, setting his glass down on a side table, his eyes burning with profound disgust as he looked at Brandon.

"Brandon..." the partner whispered, his voice dark with fury. "You told the board this land was clean. You told us your mother was an equal shareholder in the trust."

"She is!" Brandon cried out, his face pale and wet with sweat as he turned to me, his hands raised in a desperate, pathetic gesture. "Mom, please! Don't do this here! Think about my career! We can talk about the forty thousand! I'll give you half the buyout! I'll give you a million dollars!"

"You wouldn't give me three thousand five hundred dollars to save my eyes, Brandon," I said, looking him straight in his terrified, watery eyes. "You told me family doesn't spare a dime. Now, the law is going to audit every dime you ever took from your father's memory."

The two county deputies stepped forward, their heavy leather boots clicking on the polished stone floor. They forced Brandon’s arms behind his tailored suit, clicking the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Brandon Whitaker," the lead deputy read flatly. "You are under arrest for felony elder fraud and corporate forgery."

As they led my son out of his three-million-dollar lake house, his bare leather shoes slipping on the wet driveway, Courtney wept hysterically against the marble pillar, her lifestyle, her country club memberships, and her silk dresses vanishing into the rain.

I turned my back on the lakefront mansion, taking Sophie’s arm as we walked down the stone steps into the clean night air.
