Chapter 10

Chapter 10: The Price of Freedom
The fallout was instantaneous and absolute.
Within two hours of the press release, the narrative flipped completely. The internet, which had been ready to crucify me, turned its collective wrath toward my family. The video of Ryan hurting an eight-year-old girl went viral on TikTok, gaining millions of views under the hashtag #JusticeForMaya.
My mother’s Facebook page was flooded with tens of thousands of comments calling her a toxic enabler. She deleted her account by midnight.
On Friday morning, I received one final phone call from my father. His voice didn't have any anger left. He sounded like a broken, old man.
"Julian..." he whispered. "The bank... they just called. They’re reviewing the mortgage on our house. Because your corporate name was listed as a guarantor, they're saying we need to re-qualify or pay the remaining balance. We can't afford it. Please... you have to take down the video. People are throwing trash on our lawn."
"You should have taught Ryan not to throw trash at my daughter, Dad," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "You reaped what you sowed. You chose your favorite. Now enjoy his company in the house you're about to lose."
I hung up. I blocked the number. The final bridge had burned, and the smoke was beautiful.
That evening, I came home early. The house was quiet, filled with the warm, comforting scent of Emily’s cooking. I walked into the living room and found Maya sitting on the rug, surrounded by a brand-new set of paints, glitter, and colorful cardboard boxes I had bought her.
She looked up, her eyes bright and completely free of the trauma from a few days ago.
"Daddy!" she cheered, running into my arms. I lifted her up, holding her tightly against my chest. "Look! I’m making a new box. This one is for Mommy's jewelry!"
"It's perfect, sweetie," I whispered, kissing her cheek.
Emily walked out of the kitchen, leaning against the doorframe, a peaceful smile on her face. "The news is saying Ryan's loan sharks showed up at your parents' place. The police had to be called. Ryan was arrested for outstanding corporate fraud warrants Marcus uncovered."
I set Maya down, watching her happily return to her painting. I walked over to Emily, wrapping my arms around her waist.

"He's their problem now," I said softly, looking out the window at the peaceful evening sky.
The golden child had finally run out of gold. His life was over, completely dismantled by the very hands that had built it. But as I looked at my wife and my daughter, I knew that my life—our true life—was finally, beautifully beginning.
