Chapter 4: The Immediate Aftermath

The heavy glass doors of the restaurant swung shut behind us, cutting off the muffled sounds of my mother’s rising hysterics. The cool night air hit my face, and for the first time in thirty-six years, I felt like I could breathe. Really breathe.

Beside me, Emily immediately knelt down in front of Maya, gently taking her small hands. "Are you okay, sweetie?"

Maya nodded, though her bottom lip still trembled slightly. She looked up at me, holding the crumpled cardboard box like a wounded animal. "Did I ruin Uncle Ryan’s party, Daddy?"

"No, bunny," I said, dropping to one knee so I was eye-level with her. I carefully smoothed down a bent corner of the colorful paper she had worked so hard on. "You brought love into that room. Some people just don’t know what to do with something that valuable. But I do. This is going right on my office desk tomorrow."

A tiny, fragile smile broke through her tears. Emily looked up at me, her eyes shining with a mixture of pride and fierce relief. She knew what this meant. She knew the invisible chains I had finally broken tonight.

My phone vibrated violently in my pocket.

Mother.

Then a text followed immediately from my father: 'Turn around right now. You are causing a scene and humiliating this family. Your brother is in shock.'

I locked the screen without replying. Let him be in shock. For years, I had absorbed every shockwave Ryan created. It was time for him to feel the ground shake under his own feet.

As we walked toward the parking lot, the roar of a high-end engine echoed from the valet circle. I didn’t even have to look to know what it was. A sleek, matte-black BMW M4 pulled up to the curb.

Ryan’s pride and joy.

Or rather, my pride and joy that Ryan had been treating like a personal gift for the last eighteen months. He didn’t know it yet, but the digital repossession order I had submitted inside the restaurant had already flagged the vehicle’s GPS.

"Sir?" the valet looked at me, holding the keys to my SUV. He looked uncomfortable, clearly having witnessed the sudden, chilling shift in the party inside.

"Thank you," I said, slipping him a hundred-dollar bill. "And do me a favor. If anyone asks for the keys to the black BMW over there, tell them the account on file has been restricted."

The valet blinked, looking at the luxury sports car, then back at me. "Understood, Mr. Vance."

We got into the SUV. As I started the engine, I looked back at the glowing windows of the restaurant. Through the glass, I could see Ryan standing near the entrance, frantically pacing, his phone pressed hard against his ear. He was likely trying to call his buddies, his landlord, or his credit card companies, desperately trying to find a leak in a ship that had already completely sunk.

Emily reached over the center console, resting her hand over mine. "He’s going to come after you. All of them are."

"Let them," I said, shifting into drive. "They’re going to find out exactly how much it costs to live without me."
