The police came the next morning.
Not because I called them.
Because the hospital did.
Mandatory reporting.
Child endangerment.
Words that suddenly applied to someone I used to trust with my life.
Sarah cried when they questioned her.
She said she didn’t mean it.
She said it got out of hand.
She said she thought he was pretending.
But the facts didn’t change.
She locked an eight-year-old child in a cold basement.
Ignored calls.
Ignored messages.
Ignored a child asking for help.
And nearly killed him because it was more convenient than dealing with him.
Family doesn’t erase consequences.
It makes them heavier.
The investigation moved quickly.
Charges were filed.
Visitation between our families stopped immediately.
