Chapter 5: The Promise

Weeks later, Noah finally came home.

The house felt different.

Quieter.

Safer.

Emily had moved his room closer to ours.

I installed a small lock system—not to keep him in, but to make sure no door in this house could ever trap him again.

One night, I found him sitting on the edge of his bed.

“You okay, buddy?” I asked.

He nodded slowly.

“Dad… I was really scared.”

I sat beside him.

“I know.”

He looked down at his hands.

“I thought maybe you didn’t know where I was.”

That hit harder than anything else.

I gently lifted his chin so he could see my face.

“Listen to me,” I said. “There is nowhere in this world you could be that I wouldn’t come find you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Promise?”

“I swear it.”

He leaned into me, and for the first time since that day…

I felt something other than anger.

I felt relief.

Because he was here.

Because we still had time.

Because even though one person’s cruelty nearly took everything from us…

Love had brought him back.

And this time—

May you like

I would never take that for granted again.

The End.
