Chapter 13 - what Ryan signed before the pregnancy
Ryan’s confession came after prosecutors confronted him with the Meridian documents.
He asked for a cooperation agreement.
Emma did not attend.
She read the transcript later.
Victor recruited Ryan six years earlier.
Before Emma.
Before marriage.
Before the charity race.
Ryan initially worked on Meridian’s trust structure without knowing Emma personally.
Victor later directed him toward her.
Ryan claimed he did not know Meridian was connected to Daniel’s stolen ownership until after marriage.
Prosecutors asked:
“Why amend the trust in 2025?”
Ryan answered:
“Victor told me Emma was pregnant with twins.”
“But the amendment predates the public pregnancy announcement.”
“Yes.”
“How did Victor know?”
Ryan hesitated.
“He had access to a fertility clinic investor.”
Emma nearly dropped the transcript.
Her pregnancy had been natural, but she and Ryan had undergone preliminary fertility testing after a year of trying.
Someone inside the clinic leaked information.
Nothing suggested medical manipulation.
Only privacy violation.
Still horrifying.
Victor learned Emma was carrying twins before she told family.
He ordered Ryan to amend the hidden fund.
“Why twins?” prosecutors asked.
Ryan answered:
“Because the succession formula divides voting rights between two protected beneficiaries.”
The original Bennett structure had been designed to prevent one guardian from controlling all descendant shares.
Two children meant automatic division into separate trusts.
Meridian wanted to prepare around that.
Ryan claimed he believed the amendment protected them.
Maybe he believed pieces of his own lies.
Then came the question that mattered.
“Who instructed Victor?”
Ryan looked terrified.
“I never met them.”
“The Meridian owner?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were trustee.”
“On paper.”
“Who sent instructions?”
“An attorney named Evelyn Ward.”
Margaret Vale went still when she heard.
She knew the name.
Evelyn Ward had worked with Claire.
Not as an attorney.
As Claire’s college roommate.
Emma searched her memory.
Aunt Evie.
Not an actual aunt.
A woman who sent birthday cards until Emma was thirteen.
Then stopped.
Emma whispered:
“I remember her.”
Daniel did too.
Evelyn Ward had attended Daniel and Claire’s wedding.
After Claire died, she disappeared from Emma’s life.
Why?
Detective Ortiz traced her.
Evelyn Ward officially died in 2010.
Again.
A death.
Again questionable.
Emma had lost patience with certificates.
The woman’s law license, however, remained linked to a trust-services company until 2024 through delegated credentials.
Someone had used her identity after death.
Or she was alive.
Margaret said:
“Claire trusted Evelyn.”
Daniel frowned.
“Too much?”
Margaret did not answer.
They searched Claire’s preserved correspondence.
One email from 2003:
CLAIRE TO EVELYN:
If anything happens, Daniel cannot come back until Emma is safe.
EVELYN:
I’ll make sure she is.
Claire had entrusted Emma’s safety to Evelyn.
After Claire died, Emma went to grandmother Evelyn Hart.
No obvious connection to Evelyn Ward.
Then another email:
CLAIRE:
Do not let Meridian turn Emma into the successor.
EVELYN WARD:
I understand.
Emma stared.
The word successor had appeared before.
Claire knew Meridian had plans involving her daughter.
She was trying to stop them.
Yet in 2002 someone created the Bennett Continuity Fund naming Daniel’s descendants.
Maybe Claire?
Hannah examined the settlor records again.
A sealed notarial index finally surfaced.
Initials:
C.B.
Claire Bennett.
Daniel stood.
“No.”
Emma stared.
“My mother created the fund?”
Possibly.
Why would Claire create the very entity later used to siphon control?
Margaret thought she knew.
“To trap Meridian.”
A defensive trust.
Claire may have created it to recover stolen shares without alerting Victor.
Then someone hijacked it after her death.
The original trust terms likely protected Emma.
Later amendments corrupted them.
Ryan’s 2025 twin amendment was only the latest.
The person using Evelyn Ward’s credentials may have controlled the trust for years.
Detective Ortiz looked at Emma.
“Your mother may have built the structure meant to save the company.”
“And someone turned it against us.”
“Yes.”
Then Hannah found one last original clause deleted in 2004:
NO SPOUSE OF A BENNETT DESCENDANT MAY SERVE AS TRUSTEE.
Ryan’s appointment had violated the founding document from the beginning.
Someone had erased Claire’s safeguard after she died.
Whoever did it had access to her legal files immediately after the crash.
The executor of those files was not Evelyn Hart.
