Chapter 8 - Ryan’s first meeting with Emma was arranged
Ryan finally stopped pretending their meeting had been accidental.
He asked Emma to speak without police.
She refused.
Detective Ortiz sat in.
Hannah sat in.
Daniel remained outside because Emma did not want the conversation becoming a fight between men who had both lied to her.
Ryan looked exhausted.
“Victor introduced us.”
Emma said nothing.
“He knew you volunteered at the charity race.”
“And sent you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To learn whether you knew about the trust audit.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“You married me for information?”
“No.”
“You approached me for information.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“I fell in love with you.”
Emma looked away.
Ryan continued.
“The first three months were supposed to be simple. I’d get close. Learn what Evelyn had told you. Report back.”
“Did you?”
“At first.”
Emma felt sick.
“What did you tell him?”
“That you knew almost nothing.”
“That was true.”
“Yes.”
“Why keep seeing me?”
“Because I wanted to.”
“And Victor allowed that?”
“He thought it gave him a long-term advantage.”
Emma touched her belly.
“So our marriage was useful.”
“To him.”
“To you?”
Ryan looked ashamed.
“I told myself I was separating the two things.”
“You were sleeping with Victor’s daughter.”
Silence.
“When did Sabrina start?”
“Eight months ago.”
“Why?”
Ryan had no dignified answer.
“I was scared.”
Emma stared.
“You were scared, so you had an affair?”
“Victor started pushing harder after Evelyn died. He said the twins changed everything. Sabrina was around the office. I was drinking. We started talking.”
“Then sleeping together.”
“Yes.”
“Did Victor know?”
Ryan hesitated.
“Eventually.”
“Did he care?”
“No.”
That hurt in an unexpected way.
Victor treated his own daughter as another piece.
Emma asked:
“What did he promise you?”
Ryan looked down.
“If the settlement closed, my debt would disappear.”
“What debt?”
“Four million.”
Emma stared.
“How?”
“A failed investment. Then borrowing to cover it.”
“You hid four million dollars from me?”
“Yes.”
“Victor owned the debt?”
“Through an affiliate.”
There it was.
Leverage.
Victor had Ryan financially trapped.
Not innocent.
Trapped.
Ryan continued.
“He said if you signed before delivery, the claim would disappear, the debt would disappear, and I could walk away.”
“From me?”
“From him.”
Emma looked at him.
“Did Sabrina think you meant from me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you correct her?”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“No.”
His cowardice had fed her fantasy.
“What did you tell her about today?”
“Nothing.”
“She knew I was signing something.”
“I told her the settlement deadline was tonight.”
“Why?”
“She kept asking when we could be together.”
“And you said after tonight.”
Ryan began crying.
“I said after tonight, everything would change.”
Emma remembered Sabrina screaming at the station.
After tonight, she wouldn’t matter anymore.
Ryan had provided the words.
Someone else had sharpened them.
He continued:
“I never told her to hurt you.”
“I believe that more than I believe you’re a good man.”
Ryan flinched.
Emma asked one final question.
“Who is Victor afraid of?”
Ryan looked up.
“What?”
“The person on his call.”
Ryan’s face changed.
He knew something.
“Who?”
“I don’t know the name.”
“Then what do you know?”
“Victor has been reporting to someone for years.”
Daniel, listening from outside through Ortiz’s permission, stepped into the doorway.
Ryan stared.
“You.”
Daniel frowned.
“Me?”
“Not exactly.”
Ryan looked at Emma.
“Victor calls the person ‘the surviving partner.’”
Daniel went still.
Midwestern Rail Safety had three founding partners.
Daniel Bennett.
Victor Cole.
And a woman named Margaret Vale.
Daniel whispered:
“Margaret died before the warehouse fire.”
Ryan shook his head.
“Victor doesn’t think so.”
Emma felt a familiar coldness.
Another dead person who might not be dead.
But Daniel’s reaction carried something else.
Margaret Vale had not merely been a business partner.
