Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Breach

By 9:00 a.m., the executive floor of Vance Estates was a silent, suffocating trap.

Damon stood at the glass podium in the center of the main boardroom, looking immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit, his cufflinks gleaming under the modern lighting. He was smiling, hosting an early meeting with his senior project directors and three city planners, entirely confident that his corporate expansion was proceeding on schedule.

Beside him sat Vanessa, his personal communications assistant, taking notes on a digital tablet with a smug, satisfied efficiency.

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

The chatter in the room died instantly. Damon’s smile froze into a hard, rigid line as I walked into the room, dressed in a sharp black business suit, my hair pulled back into a tight, professional bun. Beside me walked Owen Merritt, his face a pale, unreadable mask of absolute fury, accompanied by Martin Wells and three federal fraud investigators from the state department.

"Clara?" Damon stammered, taking a half-step back from the podium. "What is the meaning of this? You’re supposed to be resting at home. We're in the middle of a development review."

"The review is over, Damon," I said, my voice echoing clearly off the high glass walls of the suite.

Martin Wells stepped forward, placing a thick, leather-bound folder flat on the glass conference table with a loud, definitive thud.

"At 8:30 a.m. today, the Illinois chancery court approved an emergency, system-wide asset freeze on all accounts registered to Vance Estates and Vanguard Management," Martin announced to the silent room. "Furthermore, a federal grand jury has officially unsealed an indictment for corporate forgery, identity theft, and grand larceny involving the Sinclair Trust."

"This is an absolute farce!" Damon yelled, his voice cracking as he looked toward the senior directors in the room for support. "My wife is experiencing a severe clinical panic attack! She’s been unstable since the third trimester! Security, remove these people immediately!"

"The security guards are currently being replaced by the state police, Damon," Owen Merritt said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble as he stepped toward the table. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a handful of printed bank statements, throwing them directly at Damon’s chest.

The white papers scattered across the glass table, reflecting the bright light.

"The four hundred thousand dollars you transferred to my wife’s shell company on Tuesday morning was flagged and recalled by our asset protection team, Damon," Owen hissed, his knuckles turning white as he leaned over the table. "Claire has already been detained at the airport. She signed a full confession ten minutes ago to avoid the wire fraud charges. She gave us the passwords to your private server."

Damon looked down at the papers, his face draining of all color, his skin taking on the sickly gray hue of wet plaster. He looked from Owen to the federal investigators, his easy, arrogant confidence completely evaporating as the walls of his kingdom crumbled inward.

"Clara, please," he whimpered, his eyes wide with a sudden, pathetic pleading as he looked at my pregnant belly. "We can talk about this privately. We're a family. Think of Grace... she needs a father with a clean name."

"My daughter has an honorable name, Damon," I said, my voice steady as iron. "It's Carter. And it’s the only name that’s staying on this building."
