Chapter 5 - An Unwritten Ledger

The evening sun rose high over the rolling hills of my family's private estate in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, amber, and dusty apricot. The frost of the winter had melted away, replaced by the fresh, sweet scent of blooming jasmines and damp earth.

I stood on the wide cedar deck of the cottage, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. Grace was sleeping peacefully in her nursery upstairs, her world quiet, secure, and entirely protected from the monsters of the past.

My phone, resting on the wooden table beside my rocking chair, suddenly vibrated with a soft, persistent hum.

I picked it up, expecting to see a routine financial update from Martin Wells.

Instead, the screen displayed an automated alert from the private cloud server I used to monitor the Sinclair Trust backup drive.

ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED OVERRIDE ATTEMPT DETECTED ON REGIONAL LEDGER DB-9.

My fingers went entirely cold against the glass screen. I tapped the icon, opening the live tracking log. The IP address used for the override was routed through an encrypted server based in Zurich, Switzerland. But it wasn't the location that made my breath catch in my throat. It was the specific file they were trying to download.

It was the Vanguard Management drive—the one containing the hidden financial records of the downtown penthouse where Damon and Claire had met.

My phone buzzed again, a new text message appearing from an unknown number with an international country code. I opened it, my hand shaking slightly as I read the single, chilling line of text:

“Clara Carter, the audit is not complete. Damon was only the manager of the local accounts. The true owners of the Vanguard shell company are coming to collect the remaining twelve million dollars from your family's trust. We’ll see you soon, auditor.”

The line went dead, and the security feed flickered into static.

I slowly lowered the phone, looking out at the beautiful, quiet waters of the lake. The forest was still, the sun was bright, and the birds were singing, but as a sleek, dark black sedan slowly turned into the gravel lane leading to my cottage, I realized that the ledger of my family's survival was not yet closed.

It was an open map, and the battle for my home was only just beginning.
