Chapter 5 - The Subpoena of Dr. Howard

At 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, the pristine, marble-lined lobby of BioTech Diagnostics in downtown Chicago was interrupted by the sound of heavy tactical boots.
Dr. Harold Howard, a silver-haired man in an immaculate white lab coat, was walking toward the executive elevators carrying an alligator-skin briefcase when four armed FBI agents stepped through the glass turnstiles.
Beside them walked Colonel Aaron Carter in full dress uniform.
"Dr. Harold Howard?" the lead agent announced, flashing a gold badge bearing the seal of the Department of Justice.
Dr. Howard froze, his hand tightening on the handle of his briefcase. "What is this? This is an independent commercial laboratory! We have client privacy protocols—"
"You have an unsealed federal search warrant, Dr. Howard," Colonel Carter said, his voice flat and unyielding. "Signed forty minutes ago by Chief Judge Hanley of the Federal District Court."
Howard’s face drained of all color, his lips trembling behind his neatly trimmed beard. "Judge Hanley...?"
"We’ve already mirrored your secondary cloud servers, doctor," Carter continued, stepping closer until he towered over the physician. "We have the original, unredacted mass spectrometry logs for Clara Whitaker from June, July, and last week. The ones that flagged four hundred micrograms of thallium per liter of blood. The ones you manually erased from the civilian portal before sending a fabricated report of 'normal iron deficiency' to the family court."
"I... I was advised by Mrs. Patricia Whitaker that the patient was self-administering unverified supplements!" Howard stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the building exits. "I was only trying to protect the family from public embarrassment!"
"You took six hundred thousand dollars in 'unrestricted research grants' from Patricia’s foundation two days after you erased the first toxic panel, Howard," the FBI agent said, stepping behind the doctor and pulling his arms behind his white coat.

The cold steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists with a sharp, echoing snap that caused the receptionists and lab technicians to gasp in horror.
"Dr. Harold Howard," the agent read from a laminated card, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, fabrication of medical evidence in a judicial proceeding, and health care fraud under federal jurisdiction."

As the agents led the disgraced doctor through the revolving doors toward a waiting black federal transport van, Colonel Carter picked up the alligator-skin briefcase from the marble floor.
Inside was the master key: Dr. Howard’s personal encrypted laptop containing twelve recorded phone conversations between him and Patricia Whitaker, discussing the exact weekly dosage required to ensure I would "collapse before the custody decree was signed."
