Chapter 7 - The Eviction of Patricia

Judge Hanley slammed his heavy wooden gavel onto the bench with a crack that sounded like a gunshot.

"Let the record reflect that thirty minutes ago, the United States District Court unsealed a seven-count criminal indictment against Daniel Whitaker, Patricia Whitaker, and Dr. Harold Howard," Judge Hanley declared, his eyes burning with disgust as he looked down at the defense table.

Patricia gasped, rising from the front row of the gallery, her pearls rattling against her collarbone. "This is an outrage! Richard, you know my family! We are pillars of this city! My late husband built the rail lines that run through this county!"

"Your late husband would be sickened by the parasites sitting in this courtroom today, Patricia," Judge Hanley barked, leaning over his bench. "You used chemical warfare agents inside your son’s home to poison the mother of your grandchild for corporate shares."

Victoria Vance stepped to the podium, placing three digital tablets flat on the wood.

"We have entered into evidence the certified audio recordings extracted from Dr. Howard's private server, Your Honor," Victoria said, tapping the screen.

The high-definition audio filled the courtroom speakers. Patricia’s unmistakable, haughty voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls:

"Give her another half-dose on Sunday night, Daniel. We need her trembling when she takes the stand on Tuesday. Judge Hanley won't grant custody to a woman who can't even hold a glass of water."

Daniel’s defense attorneys frantically pushed their chairs back, taking three physical steps away from their client as if he had suddenly caught fire.

"No! That's a deepfake!" Patricia shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into feral hysteria as she lunged toward the bar. "Daniel, do something! Call Harrison! Call the governor!"

"The governor doesn't take calls from federal prisoners, Mrs. Whitaker," the lead US Marshal said, stepping behind her.

He grabbed her wrists, pulling them behind her designer Chanel jacket. The sharp, mechanical click of the steel handcuffs echoed across the room.

"Patricia Whitaker," the marshal read flatly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, federal wire fraud, and witness tampering."

"Get your hands off me!" she screamed, her designer shoes squeaking against the floor as two deputies dragged her toward the holding cell door. "Daniel! Save me!"

Daniel didn't answer her. He sank to his knees beside the defense table, his head in his hands, his body shaking with dry, terrified sobs as the marshals closed in around him.

He looked up at me through his fingers—begging, weeping, entirely stripped of the arrogant cruelty that had defined our marriage.

"Clara, please," he whimpered. "Think of Lily. You can't let her grow up with her father in prison."

I looked down at him with the cold, unyielding silence of a woman who had clawed her way back from the grave.

"Lily already has a protector, Daniel," I said softly. "And she will never hear your voice again."
