Chapter 4

Part 4: The Shadow Accomplice
The revelation of Victoria’s financial movements before the fake death certificate was generated sent shockwaves through the legal proceedings. The judge ordered her held without bail pending trial, citing her immense wealth as a flight risk and her actions as a continuous danger to society.
But Ryan and I couldn't celebrate yet. The mystery of the fake military documents still hung over us like a dark cloud.
"She couldn't have accessed the military casualty database on her own," Ryan said that evening as we sat in Marcus’s private law office. He was tracking lines of data on a laptop, using his secure military login to check internal access logs. "To create a forged document that matches the exact digital formatting of the Department of Defense, you need an active Common Access Card with high-level clearance. Someone inside Fort Meade or the Pentagon helped her."
Marcus poured himself a cup of coffee. "Have you found any digital footprints?"
"Yes," Ryan said, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the screen. "An authorized user accessed my file exactly four days before my unit went dark in the valley. The user ID belongs to a Colonel Thomas Vance... wait, no. Not Vance. Colonel Thomas Vance is retired. The ID belongs to Colonel Bradley Vance. Marcus... is he related to you?"
Marcus froze, his coffee cup stopping halfway to his mouth. His face grew incredibly pale. "Bradley is my nephew. He’s the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel at the regional command base."
The room went completely silent. The betrayal cut deep. Marcus had been Ryan’s godfather for thirty years, a man of absolute integrity. But his own nephew was wrapped up in Victoria’s conspiracy.
"Marcus, I'm sorry," Ryan said quietly.
"Don't be sorry," Marcus said, his voice shaking with a mixture of shock and fury. He slammed his coffee cup onto the desk. "If Bradley did this, he has dishonored our family, his uniform, and the United States Army. He is a cancer, Ryan. And we are going to cut him out."
Marcus immediately picked up his phone and dialed a private number. "Get me the Staff Judge Advocate at the regional command. This is Judge Marcus Vance. We have a national security and major military fraud issue."
Within twenty-four hours, the trap was set. With the help of military CID (Criminal Investigation Division), Ryan and Marcus tracked Colonel Bradley Vance’s recent financial transactions. The results were sickening. Victoria Hale had transferred over $500,000 into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under a shell corporation owned by Bradley’s wife. In exchange, Bradley had used his high-level security clearance to alter Ryan’s status to "MIA/Presumed Deceased" in the system for just long enough to generate the official-looking documents, intending to change it back later to a "clerical error" once Victoria had secured custody of the baby and control of the estate.
The next morning, Ryan, dressed in his full pristine service uniform, accompanied the military police as they marched into Colonel Bradley Vance’s office at the base.
Bradley was sitting at his desk, casually sipping tea, when the door burst open. When he saw Ryan standing there, alive and well, he dropped his tea cup. It shattered on the floor, splashing brown liquid across his expensive leather shoes.
"Colonel Bradley Vance," the lead CID agent announced, presenting an arrest warrant. "Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, you are under arrest for treasonous conduct, bribery, falsifying official documents, and conspiracy to commit a felony. Hand over your sidearm and your credentials."
Bradley looked at Ryan, his lips trembling. "Ryan... listen to me, your mother told me it was just a financial strategy! She said you agreed to it! She said it was to protect the estate from taxes!"
May you like
"You sold my life for half a million dollars, Colonel," Ryan said, his voice flat, devoid of any pity. "You told my wife I was dead while I was fighting for my life in a ditch. You are a coward, and you will spend the rest of your days in Leavenworth military prison."
As Bradley was led away in handcuffs, his rank insignia stripped from his shoulders, Ryan took a deep breath. The shadow accomplice had fallen. Victoria’s network of corruption was crumbling piece by piece. She was now completely isolated, stripped of her military connections, her high-society friends, and her political cover. She was just an old woman facing a mountain of federal and state charges, waiting for her final judgment.
