Chapter 5

Part 5: The Fall of Victoria Hale
The day of the final trial arrived, coinciding with the beginning of my ninth month of pregnancy. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, high-society gossip-mongers, and military personnel. The story of the wealthy matriarch who tried to burn her pregnant daughter-in-law with an iron while fabricating her son’s death had become a national sensation.
Richard Sterling attempted one final, desperate defense strategy. He placed Victoria herself on the stand, hoping her fragile appearance would elicit sympathy from the jury.
Victoria walked to the witness stand with slow, dragging steps. She looked frail, her voice shaking as she answered Sterling’s softball questions.
"I loved my son more than life itself," Victoria wept into a lace handkerchief. "When I received that terrible news, my mind snapped. I wasn't trying to hurt Alana. I wanted to bring her close to me. The iron... it was a delusion. I thought I was ironing my grandson’s baby clothes. I didn't know what I was doing. I am just a broken, grieving mother."
It was a masterful performance. I saw a few members of the jury looking sympathetic, whispering among themselves. Sterling smiled confidently, believing his theatrical strategy was working.
Then, Sarah Jenkins stood up for the cross-examination. She didn't ask a single question. Instead, she turned to the technical technician at the prosecution table.
"Your Honor, we would like to play the full, unedited audio recording from the victim’s camera device, specifically the segment from two minutes before the assault, which the defense previously claimed was irrelevant," Jenkins announced.
Sterling jumped up. "Objection! This is redundant!"
"Overruled," Judge Pendelton barked. "Play the audio."
The courtroom speakers crackled to life. It wasn't the sound of a grieving mother. It was Victoria’s voice, loud, clear, and dripping with calculated malice, recorded right outside my front door before she walked into the kitchen. She was speaking to one of her hired fixers.
"...Once she signs the papers, we take her to the private clinic in the mountains. Tell the doctor to prepare the labor inducement drugs. As soon as that brat is out of her body, I want her committed to a state asylum. We’ll pay the doctors to diagnose her with severe postpartum schizophrenia. She’ll never see the light of day again, and she’ll never touch a penny of my son's estate. That trailer-park trash thinks she can be a Hale? I’ll show her what happens to people who try to climb out of the mud."
The audio stopped. The silence in the courtroom was deafening.
The jury members who had looked sympathetic a moment ago now looked at Victoria with expressions of absolute disgust and horror. The mask of the "grieving mother" was completely ripped away, revealing the monster underneath.
Victoria’s face turned bright red, then purple. She stood up from the witness stand, her frail facade vanishing instantly. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger at me.
"You did this!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the walls like a banshee. "You dirty little brat! You trapped my son! You planned this whole thing to ruin me! I am Victoria Hale! You are nothing! You hear me? Nothing! I should have burned that baby out of you when I had the chance!"
"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Pendelton shouted, slamming his gavel down with furious force. "Bailiffs, restrain the defendant!"
Two large bailiffs grabbed Victoria as she tried to charge toward the prosecution table. She kicked and screamed, her expensive shoes flying off, her hair falling wild around her face as she was dragged back to her seat.
The jury didn't even need an hour to deliberate. They returned in less than forty minutes with a unanimous verdict.
"On the charge of attempted murder in the second degree, we find the defendant: Guilty. On the charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, we find the defendant: Guilty. On the charge of extortion and conspiracy, we find the defendant: Guilty."
Judge Pendelton looked down at Victoria, his face filled with cold contempt. "Victoria Hale, your actions are a stain on humanity and an insult to the family name you claim to protect. I sentence you to thirty-five years at the state maximum-security prison, without the possibility of parole. You will spend the rest of your natural life behind bars."
As the cuffs clicked into place one last time, Victoria looked at Ryan, her eyes pleading. "Ryan... please... I’m your mother..."
Ryan stood tall, his hand holding mine tightly. He didn't look away, but his eyes were completely empty of emotion. "Goodbye, Victoria," he said softly.
As she was led out through the back door into the shadows of prison transport, I felt a sudden, sharp contraction in my lower abdomen. I gasped, gripping Ryan’s arm.

"Alana? What is it?" he asked, panic instantly flooding his face.
I looked down. My water had broken. I looked up at him with a tearful, triumphant smile. "Ryan... I think our son is ready to meet his father."
