Chapter 10 - THE BLACK DRIVE
Chloe believed the drive contained leverage.
She contacted a private investigator known for selling information to tabloids.
She offered footage proving Daniel knew about the Rosegate lease before denying it publicly.
The investigator reported the approach to police because Chloe was already connected to an evidence inquiry.
At the arranged meeting, she handed over the drive.
It contained three folders.
The first held edited garden footage.
The second held copies of my medical and trust documents.
The third was encrypted.
Forensic analysts opened it after obtaining authority.
Inside were messages, payment schedules, audio clips, and surveillance photographs of me.
One photograph showed me leaving the neurologist’s office.
Another showed me meeting Helen Shaw.
A third showed Daniel arriving at my house weeks before the garden incident.
Someone had monitored us.
The drive also contained the original audio used to fabricate the “Cut it” clip.
My words about the rose branch had been isolated and moved.
The project file identified the editor only as R.
Chloe began cooperating after her arrest for theft-related and evidence offenses.
Her attorney negotiated no complete immunity.
She had laughed while my hair was cut.
Stolen Arthur’s watch.
Planted false notes.
Helped produce the edited video.
Cooperation could reduce punishment.
It could not erase conduct.
During her interview, Chloe said Vanessa designed most of the scheme.
“Who is R?” Detective Ortiz asked.
“Russell.”
“How do you know?”
“Vanessa said so.”
“Did you meet him?”
“Once.”
“Where?”
“A restaurant parking garage.”
“What did he look like?”
“You know what Russell looks like.”
“Did you see his face?”
“He stayed in the car.”
“What car?”
“Black sedan.”
“License plate?”
“No.”
“Did he identify himself?”
“Vanessa called him Russell.”
That was not enough.
Chloe described a signet ring with a black stone.
She also mentioned clove smoke.
Those details matched the garden evidence and jeweler’s account.
But she may have learned them from Vanessa.
“What did the man give you?” Ortiz asked.
“Cash. The black drive. A copy of Margaret’s trust.”
“What did he want?”
“The west camera disabled and her signature before Daniel returned.”
“Did he tell you to cut Margaret’s hair?”
“No.”
“Whose idea was that?”
Chloe began crying.
“Vanessa’s.”
“Why?”
“She said Margaret’s hair was the only thing she still controlled.”
“Why film it?”
“To show she agreed to a makeover and then became unstable.”
“Did you believe Margaret agreed?”
“No.”
The word entered the room quietly.
“Why continue?”
“Vanessa said once they married, I would manage events at the new Asterline campus.”
“You wanted the contract.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Margaret had been sedated?”
“I knew Vanessa put something in her tea.”
“Did you participate?”
“I crushed tablets once.”
“When?”
“The night before her fall.”
My hands went cold when I later read the transcript.
Chloe admitted crushing medication.
She claimed Vanessa added it.
She said the goal was to make me appear confused at a family dinner, not cause a fall.
“Did you know Margaret could be injured?” Ortiz asked.
“I didn’t think about it.”
“After she fell?”
“I knew.”
“Did you tell Daniel?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa said he would blame us.”
Fear did not explain everything.
Money remained.
Status.
A promised career.
The pleasure of joining the person holding power instead of the woman trapped in a chair.
The black drive also contained a spreadsheet of payments.
Chloe received eighty thousand dollars.
Vanessa received two hundred fifty thousand through a wedding-consulting company.
R received a projected six-million-dollar success fee after the lease closed.
The transfer account linked to R was not Russell’s personal account.
It belonged to a Delaware trust named North Ember.
Russell’s brother-in-law administered it.
But the beneficiary identity remained sealed behind foreign entities.
