Chapter 9 - THE STORY VANESSA SOLD TO THE PUBLIC
Vanessa gave her first televised interview three weeks after the garden incident.
She wore pale blue and no jewelry.
Her hair was pulled into a low braid.
The choice was deliberate.
“I loved Margaret,” she told the interviewer. “I wanted to help her feel beautiful before the wedding.”
The screen displayed the edited clip of me saying, “Cut it.”
Vanessa continued:
“She became frightened after Daniel arrived. His mother has always struggled when she feels she is losing control of him.”
She described the scissors as grooming she believed I requested.
The locked wheelchair as a safety precaution.
Chloe’s laughter as nervous discomfort.
My claim about the fake pregnancy as a cruel attack that caused her supposed miscarriage.
The interview transformed every act into concern.
Daniel watched from his apartment.
I watched with Helen Shaw.
“Turn it off,” Helen said.
“No.”
“You do not need to absorb this.”
“I need to know what she is saying.”
“Why?”
“Because she spent months speaking before me.”
That answer worried Helen.
Still, she let the interview continue.
Vanessa announced she had evidence of my financial manipulation.
She claimed I threatened to remove Daniel from Arthur’s trust unless he canceled the wedding.
No such power existed.
Daniel already held his own inheritance interests.
Then she displayed a handwritten note:
NO WEDDING. NO HOUSE. NO COMPANY LAND.
The handwriting resembled mine.
The ink and paper came from my study.
I had not written it.
Investigators found impressions from the same words on a notepad recovered in Chloe’s apartment.
The top sheet had been removed.
Chloe claimed I wrote the note while she was present.
Garden footage placed Chloe elsewhere on the date she provided.
The televised allegation still spread faster than the correction.
Several charities removed me from advisory roles pending review.
One longtime friend sent a message:
I love you, but perhaps everyone needs space until the full truth comes out.
I read it twice.
Then deleted it.
People often call distance neutrality when closeness would require courage.
Daniel issued no public attack.
He released a statement through Asterline:
Evidence concerning my mother and former fiancée is under lawful review. I will not distribute private footage or influence witnesses. I have stepped away from operational leadership during the independent investigation.
Investors disliked the uncertainty.
Employees respected the restraint.
Russell Greer issued a different statement.
He denied ownership in Rosegate.
Denied involvement in the edited video.
Denied entering the Lake Forest property.
He called allegations against him a family dispute contaminating corporate governance.
Then forensic accountants traced a payment from Rosegate to a consulting firm controlled by his brother-in-law.
The payment description read:
LAND ACCESS STRATEGY.
Russell said it involved another property.
The invoice listed our parcel number.
Police obtained a search warrant for his office.
They found no antique watch.
No scissors.
No clove cigarettes.
His computer contained deleted Rosegate financial models.
One model calculated returns under three scenarios:
MARGARET CONSENTS.
MARGARET INCAPACITY.
MARGARET DEATH.
Business models often include mortality assumptions.
The language alone did not prove violence.
Another file did.
A presentation titled SUCCESSION ACCELERATION listed:
Medical documentation.
Family-witness statements.
Temporary trustee activation.
Time-sensitive signature window.
Russell claimed Vanessa created it using his account.
Login records showed activity at 2:14 in the morning from his home network.
The board removed him as chief financial officer.
He was not arrested immediately.
Financial misconduct required tracing.
The garden assault required a clearer link.
