Chapter 2 - The Carver Family Trust

Detective Bennett faced Melissa. “Is the deed in your possession?”

“No.”

“Did you remove any document from that box?”

“No.”

“Did you open it?”

Melissa hesitated. “I don’t remember.”

For months, she and Ryan had told me I was forgetting things. Now, memory had become her refuge.

“Melissa,” Ryan said quietly. “Just tell them that you opened it.”

She stared at him, and the first fracture appeared between them. “You knew I was going to look! You gave me the key.”

Detective Bennett’s gaze moved between them. “What key?”

Melissa’s reply was barely audible. “His father’s spare.”

Samuel opened his leather folder. “Mr. Carter,” he said to Ryan, “were you authorized to enter your father’s house today? Or remove financial records?”

“No,” Ryan admitted.

“Did you sign your father’s name on the loan application?” Detective Bennett asked.

Ryan shook his head. “No.”

“Did your wife?”

“I thought she said you did,” Melissa answered, her voice rising. “You told me you found someone who could help with the paperwork!”

“I assumed you signed it,” Melissa countered.

The room grew tense. Neither of them seemed to know the full truth behind the forged application.

Detective Bennett asked them both to sit in the living room while Officer Patel put on gloves and began removing items from the document box: my marriage certificate, Margaret’s death certificate, the original deed, our wills, and old savings bonds.

Then he paused. At the bottom of the box was a thin blue folder I had never seen before.

“That isn’t mine,” I said.

A white label on the cover read: CARVER FAMILY TRUST.

Samuel stared at it. “Carver was Margaret’s maiden name.”

Officer Patel opened the folder. Inside were old legal documents and a recent bank statement showing that over the previous eight months, large sums of money had moved out of the trust account—including a forty-thousand-dollar transfer six weeks earlier.

Melissa’s face drained of color.

Samuel turned a page. “A parcel of land outside Ashford... just over forty acres.”

Margaret and I had shared nearly everything, yet I had never heard of this land.

“Who controls the trust?” I asked.

Samuel examined the copy. “The beneficiary schedule is missing.”
