Chapter 5 - The Man on the Porch

The realization hit me: Daniel was Margaret’s nephew, hidden away to preserve a family secret.

“Why are you calling now?” Daniel asked over the phone. “Because Martin Ellis approached me last year to sign away my interest. Someone has been using the name of the trustee to move money.”

“Who is the trustee?” I asked.

“Samuel Reed,” Daniel answered.

I stared at Samuel, who looked utterly shocked.

“That is impossible,” Samuel said, taking the phone. “I am not the trustee. Someone has been forging my firm’s name.”

Daniel’s voice grew urgent. “Mr. Carter, someone came to the farmhouse yesterday asking for the original beneficiary schedule. A tall, gray-haired man with a cane. He said he was coming to see you next. He said he knew Margaret before you did.”

A slow, deliberate knock sounded at my front door.

Three slow taps.

“Do not open it,” Daniel warned through the phone.

I walked silently to the front window and moved the curtain aside.

Standing on my porch was an elderly, tall man with gray hair, leaning on a polished wooden cane. In his hand, he held an old photograph of Margaret as a young woman, standing next to him with his arm around her.

He looked directly at the window, turned the photograph around, and pressed it against the glass.
