Chapter 13: The Promise Kept
The cemetery on the outskirts of the city was quiet, shaded by ancient, weeping willow trees. A cool breeze swept across the manicured grass, carrying the scent of fresh rain and pine.
I walked hand-in-hand with Sofia. She was wearing a new yellow dress, her cheeks flushed with a healthy pink hue that she hadn't had in years. The settlement money from the victim's compensation fund had paid for her advanced medical treatments. She was no longer a fragile bird; she was thriving.
We stopped in front of a modest marble headstone.
Elena Ramirez. Beloved Wife and Mother.
I knelt on the grass, gently pulling weeds from the edges of the stone, while Sofia placed a bouquet of fresh white lilies by the engraving.
"Hi, Mommy," Sofia chirped cheerfully. "I got an 'A' in mathematics today. And Papa made pancakes this morning, but he burned one."
I laughed softly, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. I reached out and traced the carved letters of Elena's name.
