Chapter 10 - THE NEW BEGINNING

One year later.

The sun was setting over the Pacific, casting a brilliant, golden glow across the water.

The small cottage on Cannon Beach was filled with the sound of laughter. A small group of friends—including Mara and several of Claire’s university classmates—were gathered on the back deck, drinking wine and eating fresh crab.

Claire stood near the railing, her face glowing in the warm evening light. She was wearing a simple, sleeveless summer dress, her shoulders and arms bare to the world.

The pale, silver scars along her collarbone were visible, but she no longer tried to hide them with high collars or heavy scarves. They were part of her history, but they no longer defined her future.

Daniel walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You look beautiful," he whispered.

"I feel beautiful," she said, turning her head to kiss his cheek.

She looked down at the gold wedding band on her finger, then up at the clear, blue sky. The monster was gone, locked away in a dark cell where he could never hurt another human being. The money that had bought her silence had been stripped away, and the system that had protected him had been dismantled.

But more than that, she had found a love that didn't demand her silence. A love that saw her scars and met them with a quiet, fierce protection.

"Are you ready to go inside?" Daniel asked, as the stars began to appear in the darkening sky.

"Not yet," Claire said, leaning back against him, her hand holding his tightly. "Let's just stay here for a little while longer. I want to watch the stars come out."

And there, on the edge of the world, with the cold ocean wind blowing against their faces, Daniel and Claire stood together—whole, free, and completely safe in the warmth of the life they had built together.
