On our wedding night, I gently pulled down my wife's wedding dress

The sirens grew louder, their red and blue lights reflecting off the high, leaded-glass windows of the foyer.

Victor panicked. He turned toward the back of the house, his mind frantically searching for a way out. "The boat," he muttered. "The cabin cruiser is at the marina... I can get to international waters..."

"The Coast Guard has already been notified, Victor," Daniel said, his voice following Victor like a physical weight. "Your passport has been flagged. There is no boat. There is no escape."

Victor stopped. He turned back, looking up at the two of them on the stairs. The arrogant, powerful man who had ruled his household with a whip of fear and money was gone. In his place was a terrified, aging criminal who knew his life was over.

"Claire," Victor begged, his voice cracking as he took a step toward the stairs, his hands raised in a desperate gesture. "Claire, please. Talk to him. Tell him to stop this. I'm your mother's husband. If I go down, she goes down with me. Who’s going to pay for her care? Who’s going to keep her in that private facility?"

Claire stepped forward, her hand gripping the banister. She looked down at the man who had terrified her for fifteen years, the man who had made her feel small, dirty, and broken.

"My mother chose you, Victor," Claire said, her voice clear, strong, and entirely devoid of fear. "She watched you hurt me, and she closed her eyes. I’ve already arranged for her transfer to a state-funded facility. She will have what she needs, but she will never see a dime of your dirty money again. And neither will I."

"Claire, please!" Victor cried, falling to his knees as the first police cars roared up the gravel driveway, their tires screeching to a halt outside. "I’ll give you the company. I’ll sign over the deeds. Just... don't let them take me!"

"It’s not my choice anymore, Victor," Claire said softly. "It’s the law."
