CHAPTER 1

The hospital room fell silent the moment her words hit the air.
“She’s not my mother-in-law… she’s the woman who killed my mother.”
Everyone froze.
The police officer loosened his grip on the elderly woman for a second, stunned by the accusation. The nurse turned pale. Even Ethan—the young man holding her trembling hands—stared at his wife in disbelief.
“Lena… what are you saying?” Ethan whispered.
Tears streamed down Lena’s face as she clutched the bandage on her abdomen, her body shaking from pain and fear.
“I’m telling the truth…” she sobbed. “I remembered everything.”
The elderly woman—Margaret—suddenly stopped struggling.
Her furious expression changed.
Not to guilt.
To something far more terrifying.
Calm.
Cold.
Then she laughed.
A slow, chilling laugh that sent shivers through the room.
“Oh, sweetheart,” Margaret said, adjusting her blazer as if nothing had happened. “You really should’ve stayed quiet.”
The officer tightened his grip again.
“Ma’am, you need to stop talking.”
But Margaret ignored him.
Her eyes locked onto Lena.
“You weren’t supposed to remember that night.”
Ethan’s face drained of color.
“What night?” he demanded.
Lena’s breathing became uneven again. Ethan squeezed her hand.
“You don’t have to talk if it hurts.”
“No…” Lena whispered. “He deserves to know.”
She looked at Ethan.
For three years, Ethan had loved her without hesitation. He had protected her, comforted her, and promised she would never be alone again.
But there was one truth she had buried.
One truth she had been too afraid to uncover.
Until now.
“It happened sixteen years ago,” Lena said, voice trembling. “The night my mother died.”
Margaret’s jaw tightened.
Ethan slowly stood.
“What does my mother have to do with your mother’s death?”
Lena shut her eyes.
Fragments returned like broken glass.
Rain.
Headlights.
Screaming.
Blood.
And Margaret’s face.
“I was eight,” Lena continued. “My mother worked as a private nurse for wealthy families. She took care of people in your mother’s social circle.”
Margaret hissed.
“Enough.”
The officer stepped between them.
“No. She speaks.”
Lena swallowed.
“One night, my mother received an emergency call. Someone offered her a large amount of money to come immediately.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“And?”
“She told me to stay in the car while she went inside the mansion.”
Silence.
Lena’s fingers dug into the bedsheet.
“I waited for twenty minutes. Then I heard screaming.”
Margaret’s breathing became heavier.
Lena continued.
“I got scared and ran inside.”
Her voice cracked.
“I saw my mother on the floor.”
Ethan froze.
Blood.
Everywhere.
“And standing over her…”
Lena looked directly at Margaret.
“…was you.”
Margaret’s mask finally cracked.
“Liar!”
She lunged forward, but the officer restrained her.
Ethan stepped backward as though struck.
“No…”
Lena cried harder.
“My mother was still alive. Barely. She grabbed my hand.”
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“She told me… ‘Run. Don’t trust Margaret.’”
Ethan’s hands shook.
“No… no, this can’t be true.”
Margaret’s voice became sharp.
“She’s delusional! She just gave birth—she’s unstable!”
“I didn’t give birth,” Lena screamed.
Everyone froze.
The monitor beeped faster.
Ethan stared at her.
“What?”
Lena’s lips trembled.
“I didn’t give birth…”
Her eyes filled with horror.
“They took my baby.”
The room exploded.
“What?!” Ethan shouted.
The doctor rushed in.
“Her vitals are unstable—”
Lena grabbed Ethan’s sleeve with surprising force.
“No! Listen to me!”
She gasped.
“When I woke up after surgery… my baby was gone.”
Ethan’s face twisted in confusion.
“The doctors said there were complications—”
“They lied!”
Margaret smiled.
A small smile.
That was enough.
Ethan noticed.
And something inside him broke.
Slowly, he turned toward his mother.
“Why are you smiling?”
Margaret’s smile vanished.
“Ethan—”
“WHY ARE YOU SMILING?”
His roar shook the room.
For the first time in years, Ethan wasn’t the obedient son.
He looked terrifying.
Dangerously calm.
Margaret tried to recover.
“She’s manipulating you.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.”
“She’s mentally unstable.”
“Tell me the truth!”
Margaret remained silent.
Then—
A voice came from the doorway.
“She’s telling the truth.”
Everyone turned.
A man in a black suit stood there.
Late fifties.
Silver hair.
Cold eyes.
The hospital room went dead silent.
Margaret’s face turned white.
“No…”
The man stepped forward.
“I warned you this day would come.”
Ethan stared.
“…Dad?”
His father.
Richard.
The man who disappeared ten years ago.
The man everyone believed abandoned the family.
Richard looked at Lena.
Then at Margaret.
And said the words that shattered everything:
“Your mother didn’t just kill Lena’s mother.”
He paused.
His eyes hardened.
May you like
“She also killed my sister.”
To be continued…
