CHAPTER 5

“ETHAN!!!”

Lena’s scream ripped through the hospital room like glass shattering.

The flatline tone filled the air.

BEEEEEEEEEP—

No pulse.

No movement.

No breath.

Doctors rushed in instantly.

“Clear the area!”

“Start compressions!”

“Prepare defibrillator!”

Richard stumbled backward, his legs giving out beneath him. Elena stood frozen, still holding Ethan’s lifeless hand, unable to let go.

“No…” Richard whispered. “Not again…”

Lena clutched their baby to her chest, sobbing uncontrollably.

“This can’t be happening… please… please don’t take him from me…”

The doctor began chest compressions.

“One, two, three, four—”

Another nurse prepared the paddles.

“Charging to 200.”

Margaret watched from the floor, handcuffed, her expression unreadable.

For the first time since entering the room…

She wasn’t smiling.

The doctor pressed the paddles.

“Clear!”

THUD!

Ethan’s body jolted.

The monitor remained flat.

BEEEEEEEEEP—

Lena screamed harder.

Elena fell to her knees.

“No…”

The doctor shouted again.

“Charge to 300!”

Richard’s tears streamed down his face.

He had just found his son.

His daughter.

His family.

He couldn’t lose them now.

Not like this.

“Clear!”

THUD!

Ethan’s body jerked again.

Still nothing.

BEEEEEEEEEP—

The room sank into despair.

The lead doctor’s face tightened.

“One more.”

Lena shook violently.

“No… Ethan, please…”

She moved closer despite the nurses.

Tears poured down her face.

She looked at him.

Really looked at him.

The man who stayed.

The man who protected her.

The man who took a blade meant for her.

Her voice broke.

“You promised me…”

Silence.

“You promised our baby would grow up with both parents.”

She gently took Ethan’s hand and placed it against the baby’s tiny fingers.

The newborn instinctively curled those tiny fingers around Ethan’s finger.

The entire room froze.

Lena sobbed.

“Your child needs you.”

A tear rolled down Elena’s cheek.

Richard stopped breathing.

Even Margaret stared.

Lena leaned close to Ethan’s ear.

Her voice became a whisper.

“If you leave now…”

Her body shook.

“…I’ll never forgive you.”

The doctor yelled.

“Charging!”

The machine hummed.

“CLEAR!”

THUD!

A second passed.

Nothing.

Then—

BEEP.

Everyone froze.

Another beat.

BEEP.

Then—

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

The monitor surged back to life.

Pulse restored.

The room exploded.

“We got him!”

“He’s back!”

Lena collapsed in tears.

Richard covered his mouth, sobbing openly.

Elena broke down.

Ethan gasped violently, dragging air back into his lungs.

Alive.

He was alive.

Lena laughed and cried at once.

“Oh my God…”

Ethan slowly opened his eyes.

Blurred shapes.

Bright lights.

Then—

Lena.

Their baby.

His father.

Elena.

His family.

He whispered weakly:

“…I’m still here.”

Lena kissed his forehead over and over.

“Yes.”

She cried.

“Yes, you are.”

Weeks later…

Sunlight poured through large courtroom windows.

Margaret sat in silence, wearing a prison uniform.

No luxury.

No power.

No control.

Only consequences.

The judge read the verdict.

“For multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy…”

Margaret stared forward.

Emotionless.

“We sentence Margaret Whitmore to life imprisonment without parole.”

The gavel struck.

Case closed.

Margaret finally turned.

Her eyes searched for Ethan.

He stood in the back of the courtroom with Lena, their baby in her arms.

Richard stood beside them.

Elena beside Richard.

A family rebuilt from ashes.

Margaret’s lips trembled.

For the first time—

She looked small.

Broken.

Alone.

Ethan met her gaze.

There was no hatred now.

Only distance.

Only finality.

He turned away.

And never looked back.

Six months later…

A warm spring afternoon.

Laughter filled a beautiful garden.

Flowers bloomed.

Birds sang.

Peace.

Real peace.

Ethan sat in a chair, fully recovered, though a faint scar remained on his side.

A reminder.

Not of pain.

Of survival.

Lena walked toward him carrying their baby girl.

“She’s hungry again,” she said, laughing.

Ethan smiled.

“Our daughter has your appetite.”

Lena rolled her eyes.

Elena approached carrying lemonade.

Richard followed behind.

Still emotional whenever he looked at his children together.

Twins.

Separated for sixteen years.

Reunited.

Healing.

Elena smiled at Ethan.

“So…”

She teased.

“Big brother or little brother?”

Ethan laughed.

“We were born minutes apart.”

Richard raised a brow.

“The records say Ethan came first.”

Elena groaned.

“Unfair.”

Laughter filled the garden.

The baby suddenly giggled.

Everyone melted.

Lena placed the baby in Ethan’s arms.

He looked down at her tiny face.

Perfect.

Innocent.

Safe.

“What should we name her?” Elena asked softly.

Ethan looked at Lena.

She smiled through tears.

He already knew.

He kissed the baby’s forehead.

“Claire.”

Silence.

Then tears.

Richard broke down again.

Elena covered her mouth, crying.

Lena smiled.

“For the mother who never stopped protecting them.”

Ethan nodded.

“For the family that was stolen…”

He looked around.

At every face.

Every survivor.

Every scar.

Every second chance.

Then he finished—

“…and finally found its way home.”

The baby Claire giggled again as sunlight wrapped around the family.

No more lies.

No more secrets.

No more fear.

Only love.

And after everything they had survived…

May you like

Love was enough.

The End.
