Chapter 2 - The Sins of the Syndicate

By midnight, the mansion was dead silent, save for the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the gallery and the rain beating against the terrace glass.
I didn't sleep. I sat in the vault room beneath the wine cellar, where my father’s personal files—untouched since his death eight years ago—were kept behind a biometric lock.
Spread across the steel inspection table were the original physical bonds from the 1986 North Docks takeover.
Everything my mother had confessed was there, written in my father’s sharp, unforgiving cursive. But as I cross-referenced the transport logs with the current operating accounts of Hale Maritime Group, an even darker reality emerged.
My underboss, Dominic Hayes—my father’s former right-hand man and the man who currently managed our port security—had known about Clara from the beginning.
For the past five years, Dominic had been siphoning millions from the Hale Group reserve accounts under the guise of "syndicate security upgrades." In reality, he had been laundering the stolen Vance family bonds through an offshore trust in Zurich, waiting for my mother to pass away so he could use the documents to stage a hostile takeover and expose the Hale family to federal racketeering charges.
A soft knock sounded on the heavy reinforced door of the vault.
It was Clara. She had changed out of her uniform into a simple gray sweater, carrying a steaming mug of black coffee.
"You haven't slept," she said quietly, setting the mug down on the edge of the steel table.
"You should hate me, Clara," I said, not looking up from the yellowed ledgers. "My father stole your family's future. You should have taken a knife to my throat while I slept."
Clara stood beside the table, her eyes scanning the contracts and names. "Hatred is exhausting, Mr. Hale. I watched my mother waste away with bitterness in her heart, looking at old newspaper clippings. Your mother showed me kindness when she had nothing left to gain. She gave me my life."
She pointed a slender finger at one of the signature lines on the Zurich transfer receipts.
"Dominic Hayes approached me two weeks ago in the courtyard," Clara whispered.
My head snapped up. "What?"
"He offered me five million dollars in bearer bonds if I helped him slip a recording device into your mother's private study," Clara said, her eyes dead serious. "He told me he had a way to 'balance the scales' for my father. He said that by Friday, the Hale family would be completely erased."
A cold, lethal fury ignited in my veins.

Dominic thought he was dealing with an orphaned girl consumed by revenge. He thought he could use the sins of the past to dismantle my family while my mother lay dying.
"Friday is our quarterly syndicate council meeting," I whispered, a dark, dangerous smile touching my lips as I closed the heavy ledger with a definitive thud. "Dominic thinks he’s walking into an execution. Let's make sure the right man stands before the firing line."
