CHAPTER 15: THE DEPOSITION OF TRUTH

CHAPTER 15: THE DEPOSITION OF TRUTH

The hospital board panel convened on a Tuesday afternoon in the main penthouse conference room. Mr. Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by three corporate attorneys from the hospital's risk-management firm.
"Dr. Hart," Sterling said, tapping a heavy black pen against a manila folder. "We have received a formal, written complaint from a major donor network alleging that you used hospital resources to legally interfere with a patient’s guardianship—specifically, the case of Leo Vance."
Emily sat at the opposite end of the table. She wasn't alone. Olivia sat to her left, and a sharp, young pro-bono attorney from the Hart Promise Fund sat to her right.
"I protected a patient whose legal guardian abandoned him during an active, life-threatening medical event," Emily said clearly.
"The father was looking for secondary funding to clear his deductible!" Sterling snapped, slamming his hand on the table. "You used your foundation's social media apparatus to publicly brand him a deserter. You are using this hospital as a theater for your personal trauma, Dr. Hart!"
The heavy double doors to the boardroom clicked open, breaking the tension.
Ashley Parker stepped into the room. She carried a heavy, certified legal banker's box under her right arm. She looked tired, but her jaw was set with a finality that made even the risk-management lawyers sit up straighter.
"What is the meaning of this?" Sterling demanded, standing up. "This is a closed administrative session. Ms. Parker, your family—"
"My family is a corporate fraud, Mr. Sterling," Ashley said, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. She walked down the length of the table and slammed the heavy box right in front of him. "Inside this box are fifteen years of tax shelters, offshore accounts, and corporate handshakes used by my father and his associates—including you, Arthur—to hide personal assets while claiming 'sudden financial hardship' to transfer medical liabilities to the state."
Sterling turned a distinct shade of ash gray. "Ms. Parker, you are speaking out of turn. Your father's firm—"

"My father's firm is currently being raided by the SEC," Ashley said, looking down at him with utter disgust. "If my sister's residency contract is terminated or altered in any way by the end of this meeting, this box goes straight to the Southern District of New York federal prosecutors. Try me."
Emily looked at her sister. Ashley met her gaze, her eyes clear, giving her a small, definitive nod. The debt was finally being paid.
