CHAPTER 18: THE FINAL BARGAIN

CHAPTER 18: THE FINAL BARGAIN

Two days before the annual Hart Promise Gala—the foundation's primary fundraising event—a courier delivered a certified, red-wax-sealed document directly to Emily’s apartment.

Olivia sat at the kitchen counter as Emily sliced the envelope open and read through the heavy parchment pages.

"What is it?" Olivia asked, noticing the immediate, tense stillness in Emily's shoulders.

"It's a formal settlement offer from Richard’s remaining personal offshore trust," Emily said, her voice completely flat. "Ten million dollars. Liquid cash. Transferred directly to the Hart Promise Fund within twenty-four hours."

Olivia narrowed her eyes, her nurse’s instinct sniffing out the poison. "And the catch?"

"A non-disclosure, non-disparagement clause," Emily read aloud, her eyes skimming the dense legal jargon.

“Upon receipt of the funds, the Hart Promise Fund shall issue a public press release stating that Richard and Karen Parker’s actions in 2011 were based on 'catastrophic, erroneous legal and medical counsel during extreme financial distress,' and that the family has fully and lovingly reconciled in private.”

Olivia stood up, walking over to press her hand against Emily’s back. "Ten million dollars, Emily. That would fund the emergency treatment gaps and legal advocacy for every single child in the entire tri-state area for the next fifteen years. Your foundation would be completely independent of hospital boards or wealthy corporate donors forever."

Emily looked at the signature line. Richard’s handwriting was shaky, stripped of its usual corporate arrogance, but still distinct.

"He wants to buy a rewrite of history," Emily whispered. "He’s giving me the exact money he refused to spend when I was thirteen, just to buy my silence now that he's on trial. He wants me to sell the truth to fund the cure."

"It's a devil's bargain, sweetie," Olivia said, her eyes soft, unconditional love radiating from her face. "But it is your choice. Nobody else's. What is the truth worth?"
