Chapter 6 - The Shadow Patient

They had to move. With the mansion destroyed, the legal proof of the DNA swap and the medical malpractice was gone. But Gabriel had a backup plan.
"The doctor who performed the procedure," Gabriel said, driving a beat-up sedan through the pouring rain. "Dr. Marcus Vance. He kept his own private ledger. If we get that, we can take it straight to the federal authorities."
They arrived at Dr. Vance’s private clinic on the outskirts of the city. The building was dark, the front glass door shattered.
"They're already here," Elena whispered, terror gripping her.
Gabriel pulled a gun from the glove compartment. "Stay in the car with Rosa. Lock the doors."
Minutes felt like hours. Inside the clinic, muffled gunshots rang out. Elena couldn't sit still. Ignoring Rosa's protests, she stepped out into the rain and crept into the clinic.
The hallways smelled of copper and ozone. She followed a trail of blood to the back office. There, Dr. Vance lay slumped over his desk, dead. Gabriel was on the floor, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the thigh.
Standing over him was Daniel, his face manic, holding a thick leather-bound folder.
"Ah, the happy family," Daniel sneered, turning the gun toward Elena. "You know, Elena, I actually loved you. But you just had to be perfect. You just had to carry his perfect child."

"Daniel, stop!" Elena cried. "You don't have to do this. We can just walk away. Let the company go!"
"And live like a rat? Like him?" Daniel laughed. "I'd rather burn it all down."
