Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER BENEATH CEDAR HOUSE

The photograph was dated two years before I was born.

Samuel stood beside our mother with one hand gripping the crib rail.

A crescent-shaped birthmark showed on his shoulder.

The same mark appeared beneath the ear of Camille’s biological baby.

Bellweather had followed our family line for generations.

Gabriel studied the photograph in silence.

“You never saw this?”

“No.”

“Mom knew Samuel was alive.”

“She discovered him during a clinic visit.”

“Then why did she leave him?”

Gabriel looked older than he had the day before.

“Preston threatened you before you were even born. He told Lena that if she tried to remove Samuel, every future child she had would belong to Bellweather.”

The archive connected Samuel’s identification code, S-M1, to Cedar House, a Callaway property outside Richmond.

Officially, Cedar House served as an executive training retreat.

Federal agents found the mansion empty.

Electricity still ran to the basement.

Behind a reinforced door lay a bedroom, a computer room, and a medical suite.

Someone had lived there recently.

Clothes hung in the closet.

Canned food filled the cabinets.

Books covered every surface.

The bedroom wall held photographs of me and Odette throughout our lives.

My high school graduation.

Odette’s first college apartment.

Our mother’s funeral.

My wedding to Weston.

A photograph of Marlo’s ultrasound.

Samuel had watched us from a distance.

On the desk sat a tape recorder.

I pressed play.

A man spoke.

“My name is Samuel Mercer. Bellweather designation S-M1. If Sable hears this, Elliot is dead or I have failed.”

His voice was calm but tired.

He described growing up inside Bellweather.

Doctors tested his memory, blood, reflexes, and responses to medication.

At age three, our mother recognized him.

Preston allowed her private visits but warned that removing him would kill the daughters she might later have.

Samuel grew up knowing Lena was his mother and watching her leave after every visit.

“I understood why she left,” he said. “Understanding did not prevent me from hating her.”

At eighteen, Samuel escaped.

Preston found him two years later.

Rather than kill him, Preston offered a bargain.

Samuel would maintain Bellweather’s encryption systems under a false identity.

In exchange, Lena’s daughters would remain untouched.

Samuel accepted.

For decades, he copied evidence in secret.

He believed one day he could expose everything.

“I told myself I was protecting children by remaining inside the system,” he said. “But every year I waited, more children entered.”

His voice broke.

“Elliot understood before I did. Silence does not become courage merely because it collects evidence.”

The recording ended with coordinates near Baltimore.

Detective Quinn traced Samuel’s false identity to Marcus Vale, a cybersecurity consultant working for Callaway Defense Systems.

Agents reached his warehouse after midnight.

The building had burned.

Two bodies were found inside.

Neither was Samuel.

A traffic camera captured Preston’s vehicle leaving the district.

A man sat bound in the rear seat.

Samuel.

Preston contacted us through an encrypted call.

He appeared inside an aircraft hangar.

Samuel knelt beside him with blood on his temple.

Adele stood near two bassinets.

Julian occupied one.

Camille’s biological son occupied the other.

Camille moved toward the screen.

“Give me my babies.”

Preston smiled.

“Which baby is yours?”

“Both.”

“You have learned sentiment from Sable.”

“I learned what you are.”

Preston placed a pistol against Samuel’s shoulder.

He demanded control of Marlo’s trust, Gabriel’s copied archive, and an international escape route.

“Bring Marlo,” he said. “Then Samuel and the infants may leave.”

“You will kill them once you have access.”

“That depends on whether you remain cooperative.”

He turned the camera.

A small American flag hung behind him.

A maintenance sign appeared near the hangar door.

RVA-PRIVATE EAST.

Richmond International Airport.

Preston either revealed his location accidentally or wanted us to recognize it.

Samuel looked toward the camera.

His right hand tapped the floor.

Nine taps.

Pause.

One.

Pause.

Seven.

Our mother’s birthday.

A code.

The screen went dark.

Federal agents prepared an assault.

Weston remained in custody, but evidence showed he had been communicating with an unknown attorney.

Josephine discovered the attorney had arranged a medical transfer for him.

The transport vehicle was attacked before dawn.

Weston escaped.

Two hours later, thermal cameras detected a limousine approaching Preston’s hangar.

Weston stepped out carrying the original founder agreement stolen from Josephine’s evidence office.

He had not escaped to save his sons.

He had come to bargain for the empire.
