Chapter 7 - THE HANGAR OF THREE HEIRS

Federal teams surrounded the private terminal.
Preston’s hangar contained fuel tanks wired to explosives.
A direct assault could kill everyone inside.
Samuel’s code opened a basement service door beneath the east wall.
Detective Quinn led the entry team.
I followed despite being ordered to remain at the command post.
Odette discovered me halfway down the corridor.
“You are supposed to be in the van.”
“So are you.”
“I came to stop you.”
“Then stop me while keeping up.”
She swore but stayed beside me.
Through a gap in the stairwell door, we saw Weston walking toward Preston.
Samuel remained tied to a chair.
Adele stood between the bassinets.
Two armed guards watched the runway.
A private jet waited with its engines ready.
Weston raised the founder agreement.
“Sign over Bellweather and Callaway Defense to me.”
Preston laughed.
“You escaped federal custody to negotiate?”
“I brought the only document that can restore your control.”
“Marlo’s trust overrides it.”
“Not if her mother signs a waiver.”
“She will not.”
“Then I will become guardian after she is declared unstable.”
The same strategy Preston had used against Camille.
They had prepared to remove me through psychiatric allegations.
Weston continued.
“Release the children and Samuel. I will deliver Sable.”
My stomach turned.
Even after everything, he believed I remained something he could deliver.
Preston studied him.
“You think you are ready to replace me?”
“I replaced you years ago. You simply refused to notice.”
Adele’s face twisted.
“We took you from nothing.”
Weston looked at her.
“You stole me from my biological mother.”
“We gave you a name.”
“You gave me your hunger and called it inheritance.”
Preston reached for the agreement.
Weston pulled it back.
“Sign first.”
Samuel kicked his chair into one guard.
The second turned.
Quinn gave the breach signal.
Agents entered from three sides.
Gunfire erupted.
I ran toward the bassinets.
Adele grabbed the newborn boy and held a syringe against his arm.
“Stop!”
She backed toward the aircraft.
“This child is replaceable.”
“No child is replaceable.”
“He was created as a reserve.”
“He is alive.”
“He is a collection of cells selected for a purpose.”
The words revealed the true foundation beneath the Callaway family.
They had never believed blood made children sacred.
They believed blood made children useful.
Samuel appeared behind Adele, still dragging a broken section of restraint.
“Adele.”
She turned.
He struck her wrist.
The syringe fell.
I caught the baby before she lost her grip.
He cried against my chest.
Across the hangar, Weston and Preston struggled over a gun.
A shot fired.
Preston staggered, struck in the side.
Weston held the weapon.
He aimed again.
I shouted his name.
He looked toward me.
The newborn in my arms had his dark hair and crescent birthmark.
Weston froze.
“Is that—”
“Your biological son.”
His grip weakened.
Preston struck him.
The gun slid beneath the plane.
Quinn tackled Preston.
Agents restrained Weston.
Camille entered after the guards were secured.
She lifted Julian first.
Then I placed the newborn beside him in her arms.
She held both boys.
One shared her blood.
One knew her heartbeat from the womb.
No one asked her to choose.
Weston sat on the floor in handcuffs.
“What is his name?”
Camille looked at him.
“You do not get to name the child you allowed your parents to classify as a backup.”
The words struck harder than the gunshot had struck Preston.
Samuel was taken to a hospital.
His injuries were not life-threatening.
Preston underwent emergency surgery under federal guard.
Adele faced kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, and trafficking charges.
Weston claimed he had intended to deceive Preston and rescue everyone.
His messages proved otherwise.
He had negotiated for control of Bellweather before the hangar assault.
Even in crisis, he had chosen ownership.
At the hospital, Samuel handed me a letter hidden inside his coat.
It came from our mother.
Sable,
The Callaways believe your future daughter will open their empire.
They misunderstand what they created.
The child will expose the graves beneath Bellweather.
Samuel explained that Lena had discovered a burial site under the institute’s rose garden.
She had tried to report it.
Adele threatened Samuel’s life.
Lena remained silent.
Ground-penetrating radar identified more than forty underground disturbances.
The first grave contained Lucy Harlan, Julian’s biological mother.
She had returned to Bellweather after being told her baby died.
They killed her.
The second grave held a missing nurse.
The third held the man hired to murder Gabriel.
By the seventh excavation, investigators understood the horror.
Bellweather had buried everyone who could not be purchased, frightened, or rewritten.
Forty-three graves.
Forty-three lives under flowers.
But beneath the deepest section, workers found no body.
They found a sealed chamber filled with hundreds of newborn hospital bracelets.
One carried my name.
One carried Odette’s.
Another bore the name of a girl born between us.
LENA MERCER.
Our mother had another daughter.
The records said the baby entered Project A-2.
The adoption file had been removed.
May you like
Someone had stolen our sister.
And a photograph inside Adele’s safe suggested she had been near us all along.
