Chapter 2: The Contract Under the Cake Table

Andrew went pale.

Not embarrassed.

Terrified.

Clara handed the leather portfolio back to the venue manager.

“Bring the second folder.”

The manager nodded.

Patricia’s eyes darted to Andrew.

“What is she talking about?”

Andrew said nothing.

That silence answered more than words ever could.

Two assistants walked in carrying a smaller black folder. Clara opened it and removed a contract with Andrew’s signature on every page.

Three months before the wedding, Andrew’s company had almost collapsed.

Bad investments.

Hidden debts.

Emergency loans.

He had told Clara it was just a temporary cash-flow issue. He said he needed help. He said they were about to become husband and wife anyway.

So Clara helped him.

Quietly.

Without telling Patricia.

Without telling the guests.

Without asking for praise.

She invested enough money to save his business.

But she added one condition.

If Andrew or his family publicly humiliated her before or during the wedding, all funds would be recalled immediately.

Patricia grabbed Andrew’s arm.

“You signed this?”

Andrew swallowed hard.

“She said it was just protection.”

Clara’s eyes stayed steady.

“It was protection.”

“For what?” Patricia snapped.

“For this exact moment.”

A guest near the front gasped.

Andrew stepped forward.

“Clara, listen. I made a mistake. My mother made a mistake. We can fix this.”

Clara looked at the torn gown.

“You didn’t make one mistake, Andrew. You made a choice every day.”

His face crumpled.

“I love you.”

She studied him for a moment.

“No. You loved what I could repair.”

The words hit him harder than a slap.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

This time, a woman in a navy suit entered with two men behind her.

Patricia stiffened.

The woman was Evelyn Grant, Clara’s attorney.

She walked straight to Clara and handed her a pen.

“The termination papers are ready.”

Andrew’s voice broke.

“Termination?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your emergency funding ends at midnight.”

Patricia’s knees nearly gave out.

Because the Whitlock family was not rich anymore.

They were only dressed like they were.
