Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Groom Who Chos
The guests began whispering louder now.
Some recorded.
Some looked away.
Some enjoyed the fall of a family that had spent years looking down on everyone else.
Andrew reached for Clara’s hand.
She moved back.
That small movement destroyed him.
“Please,” he said. “Don’t punish me for my mother.”
Clara’s calm expression finally cracked.
Just a little.
Enough to show pain.
“I waited for you to choose me once.”
Andrew froze.
“I did choose you.”
“No,” Clara said. “You chose peace. You chose comfort. You chose your mother’s approval. But you never chose me.”
Patricia suddenly stepped forward.
“This wedding will continue.”
Everyone turned to her.
Her voice shook, but she tried to command the room.
“My son will not be abandoned at the altar by some little designer playing princess.”
Clara looked at her.
Then she reached behind her neck and unclasped her veil.
The delicate fabric fell from her hair and into her hands.
“I was never playing princess.”
She placed the veil on the marble floor.
“I was deciding whether this family deserved access to mine.”
Patricia laughed weakly.
“Your family?”
Clara turned toward the back of the room.
An elderly man stood from the last row.
For most of the ceremony, no one had noticed him.
Simple black suit.
Silver hair.
Quiet eyes.
But when he stood, several business leaders in the room went stiff.
Andrew recognized him first.
His face went completely white.
“Mr. Mason?”
Clara’s father walked down the aisle slowly.
Charles Mason.
Founder of Mason Holdings.
A man Patricia had spent years trying to impress without ever realizing Clara was his daughter.
Patricia’s lips parted.
“No…”
Charles stopped beside Clara and looked at the ripped dress.
His expression did not change.
But his voice turned cold.
“You tore my daughter’s gown.”
Patricia could not speak.
Andrew turned to Clara, desperate now.
“You never told me.”
Clara looked at him sadly.
“You never asked who I was. You only asked what I could tolerate.”
Charles turned to the guests.
“This wedding is over.”
Then Clara raised one hand.
“No, Dad.”
Everyone froze.
Clara looked at Andrew.
“I want him to answer one question first.”
Andrew nodded quickly.
“Anything.”
Clara’s voice dropped.
“If your mother had not been exposed today… would you have let me marry into this forever?”
Andrew opened his mouth.
May you like
No words came out.
And in that silence, Clara got her answer.
