Chapter 3 - The Audit of Vance Construction

By 2:00 a.m., the grand dining room of the Vance estate had been requisitioned as an operational command bunker.

Caleb’s team had brought in satellite uplinks and high-speed data arrays, completely overriding the estate's private network. Marcus sat at the head of the mahogany banquet table, surrounded by twelve laptops manned by senior forensic analysts flown in via private helicopter from New York.

Isaac sat bound to a dining chair with reinforced zip-ties, his face bruised and sweat-stained, forced to watch the digital dismantling of his life. Beside him, Arthur and Wendy were guarded by two armed Aegis operators, while Clover sat in the corner, sobbing silently into her designer scarf.

“Let’s look at the bedrock of Vance Construction,” Marcus said, turning an eighty-inch monitor toward the family.

A complex, multi-tiered corporate flowchart appeared on the screen, illuminating the dark dining room in neon blue and crimson lines.

“To the public, Arthur Vance is a visionary builder,” Marcus began, his voice clinical, precise, and razor-sharp. “In reality, you’ve been running an industrial Ponzi scheme for nine years. You bid low on state infrastructure projects, divert the upfront mobilization capital into private real estate speculations in the Bahamas, and then use loans taken out against subsequent bids to cover the concrete orders from the previous job.”

Arthur’s mouth fell open, his cigar ash crumbling onto his trousers. “That... that is proprietary company strategy!”

“That is twelve counts of federal procurement fraud, Arthur,” Marcus corrected coldly. “And here is where your son made his fatal calculation.”

Marcus tapped a key. A sub-ledger opened, highlighting seventy-four wire transfers labeled ‘Structural Consultation – Gable Solutions.’

“Over the last eight months, Isaac has diverted four point two million dollars from the municipal transit hub’s emergency contingency reserve directly into a personal shell entity registered in Nevada,” Marcus said, looking directly at Clover. “Managed by Clover Gable.”

Clover let out a terrified shriek. “Isaac told me that money was a pre-nuptial signing bonus! He told me Flora had already agreed to a quiet settlement!”

“Flora never agreed to anything,” Julian Vance said, his voice cutting through her excuses. “Flora was sitting in the guest wing of this estate while her husband used her forged signature as the personal indemnifier for those four point two million dollars.”

I stood by the window, looking out at the rain beginning to fall over the manicured gardens.

“You thought I was quiet because I was weak, Isaac,” I said softly, not turning around. “You told your mother I came from nothing. You told your friends I was lucky to breathe the air in this house.”

“Flora, please...” Isaac choked out, the arrogance entirely drained from his face, leaving behind the hollow, sniveling reality of a spoiled coward. “We can fix this! It was a mistake! The riding crop—I was drunk! Clover manipulated me!”

“Don't you dare blame me, you coward!” Clover screamed from the corner, lunging toward him before an Aegis guard firmly pushed her back into her seat.

“Silence,” Noah commanded.

The room fell into an immediate, suffocating quiet.

“Julian,” Noah said, checking his watch. “What time does the state supreme court open its docket?”

“Six o’clock sharp, brother,” Julian replied with a predatory smile. “And the federal grand jury is convening at seven.”
