Chapter 8 - The Arraignment of Isaac Vance

The Cook County Criminal Courts Building at 4:30 p.m. was a fortress under siege by the national media.

Hundreds of reporters, television cameras, and photojournalists were crushed against the barricades outside Courtroom 302, shouting questions as the Vance legal defense team arrived. The headline dominating every evening broadcast was an unsparing indictment of elite cruelty: BILLIONAIRE HEIR ARRAIGNED FOR BALLROOM TORTURE AND $120M CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT.

Inside the courtroom, Isaac Vance stood before the bench.

The bespoke dinner jacket was gone, replaced by an ill-fitting orange detention jumpsuit. His wrists were secured by heavy steel handcuffs connected to a leather transport belt around his waist. His hair was greasy and uncombed, his skin gray and hollowed, his head hanging low to avoid the flashing lenses in the gallery.

I sat in the front row, flanked by Noah, Leo, Julian, Marcus, and Caleb. We sat in unified, unbreakable silence—an immovable wall of family protection.

Presiding Judge Marcus Thorne banged his heavy wooden gavel down onto the sound block with an echoing crack that silenced the murmuring chamber.

“In the matter of the State of Illinois versus Isaac Arthur Vance,” Judge Thorne announced, his eyes blazing with disgust as he reviewed the evidence binders on his desk. “The defendant stands charged with thirty counts of aggravated domestic battery, felony kidnapping, corporate wire fraud, and witness intimidation.”

Isaac’s high-priced defense attorney stepped to the podium. “Your Honor, my client is a lifelong resident of this community with no prior criminal record. We request immediate release on electronic monitoring with a reasonable bail bond of five hundred thousand dollars—”

“Bail is denied,” Judge Thorne cut him off with an icy, merciless finality.

The courtroom gasped.

“The evidence presented by the prosecution—specifically the unredacted digital recordings and the forensic medical analysis of the victim’s thirty injuries—demonstrates a level of calculated, sadistic depravity that represents an active danger to the community,” Judge Thorne stated. “The defendant will remain in maximum-security custody at the Cook County Department of Corrections pending trial.”

Isaac let out a low, ragged shriek, his knees buckling as the two court marshals seized his arms, dragging him toward the holding cells.

As he was pulled past the front row of the gallery, his bloodshot, terrified eyes locked onto mine.

“Flora!” he cried out, his voice cracking into a raw, humiliating sob. “Tell them to let me go! I’m your husband! Flora, please!”

I didn't answer. I didn't blink. I simply met his gaze with the cold, absolute stillness of a woman who had survived his violence and watched his kingdom burn to the ground.

The heavy steel door slammed shut behind him, cutting off his cries forever.
