Chapter 6 - Clover's Exposure

At 11:30 a.m., the federal prosecutor’s office in the Dirksen Federal Building was a theater of desperation.
Clover Gable sat across from Special Assistant Attorney General Katherine Ross, her expensive makeup ruined by hours of weeping, her silver designer dress stained and crumpled. Two criminal defense attorneys sat beside her, whispering frantically into her ears.
“You are looking at fifteen years for interstate wire fraud, conspiracy to launder corporate funds, and accessory to aggravated felony assault, Ms. Gable,” Katherine Ross stated, laying out twenty color photographs of the ballroom assault on the metal table.
“I didn't touch her!” Clover sobbed, her manicured fingers clawing at the table edge. “Isaac did it! He told me she was nobody! He said her family were just working-class nobodies who wouldn't dare make a sound!”
“Her brothers aren't nobodies, Ms. Gable,” Julian Sterling said, leaning casually against the doorframe with a cup of black coffee in his hand. “They are the men who just provided the United States Department of Justice with your private text messages from the last six months.”
Julian tapped his tablet, and three documents were projected onto the wall screen.
The messages were devastating:
“Make sure she signs the quitclaim deed before the birthday party, Isaac. Once her name is off the lake house, we can lock her in the guest cottage until the divorce clears.” “If she makes a scene tonight, humble her in front of everyone. Let her know who runs this city now.”
Clover buried her face in her hands, her body heaving with dry, broken gasps.
“I’ll testify,” Clover cried out, looking up at the prosecutor with raw terror. “I’ll tell the grand jury everything! The offshore accounts in Panama, the bribes Arthur paid to the municipal building inspectors, the shell companies... I’ll give you all of it! Just please, don't send me to a maximum-security prison!”
Katherine Ross looked over her spectacles at Julian, who offered a slow, indifferent nod.

“Sign the material witness confession, Ms. Gable,” Katherine said, sliding a twelve-page plea agreement across the table. “And then prepare to spend the next five years of your life under supervised probation, stripped of every cent Isaac ever gave you.”
Within ten minutes, the ink was dry. The Vance family’s most protected secret—their systemic bribery of public officials—had been officially surrendered by the very woman Isaac had abandoned his marriage to impress.
