Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Ghost Network

I woke up to the sound of a steady, rhythmic beep.
For a terrifying second, I thought I was back in the cabin, or back in the bathroom with the timer. But the harsh fluorescent light above told a different story. I was lying on a metal cot inside what looked like a concrete bunker. My head throbbed with a vicious, chemical hangover.
"She's awake," a voice said from the shadows.
I bolted upright, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Sophie!"
A figure stepped into the light. It wasn't the man in the suit. It was a woman, mid-forties, wearing a plain gray sweatshirt and jeans. Her hair was pulled back into a tight bun, and her eyes were sharp, analytical, and deeply exhausted.
"Your daughter isn't here, Clara," she said quietly. "And if you want to see her alive again, you need to stop screaming and listen to me."
"Who are you?" I demanded, my voice raw. "Where am I? Did Mark send you?"
"My name is Dr. Ellen Cross. I was the lead neurological architect at Synthex Pharmaceuticals before your husband had me systematically ruined and removed from the project," she said, sitting on a metal chair across from me. "And no, Mark didn't send me. Mark is currently a puppet, just like you were. He thinks he's the genius who unlocked the human mind. He doesn't realize he's just the delivery boy."

I rubbed my temple, trying to force the fog out of my brain. "The man at the cabin... he had a device. It made a sound, and Sophie just... obeyed him."
"That's because Mark successfully implanted the foundational trigger sequence," Ellen explained, leaning forward. "The neuro-chemical baths didn't just suppress her memories, Clara. They laid down a blank digital canvas over her neural pathways. The sound you heard was an acoustic key. It unlocks the partition Mark built. Right now, Sophie isn't a little girl anymore. She's a biological hard drive, and the people who bought her are ready to start downloading."
