Chapter 4: The False Wall and the Timer

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoing in our small living room sounded like a gunshot.
Mark didn’t flinch. He didn’t shout, yell, or beg. He just stood there, his jaw tightly clenched, staring at the lead officer with a cold, detached intensity that sent shivers straight down my spine. The easygoing, boy-next-door charm that had fooled our neighbors, our friends, and me for seven years was entirely gone. In its place was a clinical, freezing vacuum.
"You're making a massive mistake," Mark said. His voice dropped an octave, devoid of emotion. "You have absolutely no idea what you're disrupting right now."
"Save it for the station, sir," the officer replied bluntly, keeping a firm grip on Mark's arm and guiding him out into the humid night air. Outside, the flashing blue and red lights of the police cruisers sliced through the darkness, painting the walls of our quiet suburban cul-de-sac in chaotic rhythm.
I pressed Sophie’s head tightly against my shoulder, shielding her eyes from the sight of her father being pushed into the back of a police car. She was trembling violently, her small, damp fingers digging into my collarbone like a vice.
The second officer, Detective Miller, walked back out of the bathroom. The heavy scent followed him—that sweet, artificial, medicinal odor that had haunted my nightmares. In his gloved hand, he held a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside was a sleek, black electronic device with a digital timer and a specialized, high-grade syringe kit.
"Ma'am," Detective Miller said, his expression incredibly grim. "We found a hidden, spring-loaded panel behind the built-in shelving right next to the tub. There's a digital safe inside, along with several vials of an unlabeled, milky-white liquid. Does your husband have a medical or biochemical background?"

My throat went entirely dry, the air catching in my chest. "He’s a senior research chemist for Synthex Pharmaceuticals."
Miller’s eyes narrowed, a silent confirmation passing through his gaze. "We're going to need you and your daughter to come to the hospital immediately. We need a specialized toxicology team to evaluate her right now."
