Chapter 9: The Shadow on the Road

The next morning, the terrifying entity from 3:00 AM was gone. Sophie woke up with a bright smile, completely oblivious to the night before, asking if she could have chocolate chips in her oatmeal. But the dread inside me had taken root.

Using a burner phone, I dialed a secure, encrypted number that Detective Miller had given me to reach Dr. Vance directly.

"It's a severe, acute withdrawal manifestation, Clara," Dr. Vance explained, her voice incredibly tense over the staticky line. "Without the daily chemical catalyst, Sophie's brain is violently attempting to re-map its neural pathways. The partitioned memories—the trauma, the cognitive data, whatever horrors Mark forced her brain to block or calculate—are fighting to force their way into her conscious mind. You need to bring her to a specialized, secure medical facility immediately. And Clara... you need to move now. The FBI attempted to raid Mark’s private lab at Synthex yesterday morning. The entire floor had been completely gutted. Servers wiped, paper trails incinerated. Someone is aggressively erasing his existence."

A wave of icy coldness washed over me. "What about Mark?"

"His bail was quietly posted an hour ago by an anonymous offshore corporation," Dr. Vance said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Clara, get out of there—"

The line went completely dead.

I stared at the screen of the burner phone. No signal.

Panic, cold and sharp, seized my limbs. I rushed over to the front window, peeling back the heavy canvas curtains just an inch. My breath hitched in my throat.

Down at the base of the dirt driveway, barely visible through the thick pine trees and rolling morning fog, sat a massive, matte-black SUV. The windows were heavily tinted, completely blocking out the morning sun. The engine was idling, casting a faint, rhythmic vibration through the quiet woods.

The driver's side door clicked open. A man stepped out. He didn't look like a local cop or a standard private investigator. He wore a tailored, dark tactical suit, his face completely obscured by dark glasses. He didn't try to hide. He stood by the hood of the vehicle, lifted his chin, and looked directly up at the cabin window. Straight at me.

They hadn't just followed us. They were waiting for the right moment.
