Chapter 10

Chapter 10: A New Legacy
Thanksgiving morning arrived, crisp and bright with a fresh blanket of Iowa snow.
Inside the Miller household, the air was warm and smelled of roasted turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, and cinnamon apples. Music played softly from the living room speakers.
Noah was running around in a pair of festive pajamas, giggling as he dragged his stuffed blue elephant across the rug. His cheeks were healthy, his laughter full and loud.
Lauren stood at the kitchen island, wearing a comfortable sweater, her hair down and shining. She was pouring two glasses of wine. There were no dirty dishes in the sink; Ethan had washed them all an hour ago. There was no tension, no critical eyes watching her every move, no whispers of judgment echoing from the corners of the room.
Ethan walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder.
“Happy Thanksgiving, Mrs. Miller,” he murmured.
Lauren turned in his arms, looping her hands around his neck. She looked up at him, her eyes bright, clear, and completely free of the exhaustion that had plagued her just weeks ago.
“This is the best Thanksgiving I’ve ever had,” she said softly. “It’s so quiet. It’s so peaceful.”
Ethan looked out the window at the snow falling on the driveway. His phone sat on the entryway table, completely silent. He had blocked his mother, his sister, his father, and his aunts. He had traded a massive, toxic tribe for a small, sacred sanctuary. And he would make that trade a million times over.

“We built this peace,” Ethan said, looking down at his wife, then over to his happy, healthy son. “And nobody is ever going to take it away from us again.”
They clinked their glasses together, a quiet toast to a new beginning, a new legacy, and a love that had survived the fire and come out unbreakable.
