Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Standing Guard
The waiting room of the Cedar Rapids Urgent Care clinic was stark, lit by humming fluorescent lights. It was 9:30 PM. Ethan sat with Noah wrapped in a blue blanket against his chest, while Lauren sat beside him, staring blankly at the linoleum floor.
Just as the nurse called their name, Ethan’s phone buzzed aggressively in his pocket. He pulled it out.
Mom: You embarrassed me in front of your sister. We are family, Ethan. Your father is furious. We need to talk immediately.
Ethan’s fingers flew across the screen, his gaze icy.
Ethan: No. My son is sick, and my wife is running on two hours of sleep because you used our house like a hotel while watching her drown. Do not call me again tonight. Do not come to my house.
He saw the typing bubbles appear, disappear, and appear again. He flipped the phone face down on the triage table and ignored it.
An hour later, the doctor walked into the examination room, looking grave but reassuring. “Mr. and Mrs. Miller, it’s a good thing you brought him in tonight. Noah has a severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, and he’s moderately dehydrated because he hasn’t been swallowing fluids.”
Lauren choked back a sob, instantly burying her face in her hands. “I should have brought him in sooner. I’m a terrible mother. I let his grandmother convince me I was just being dramatic...”
The doctor softened, stepping closer. “Hey. Look at me. You are not a terrible mother. RSV acts fast, and family pressure can be incredibly manipulative. You brought him here tonight, and that’s what matters. We’re going to give him an IV for fluids and a nebulizer treatment to open up his airways. You caught it in time.”
Ethan wrapped his arm tightly around Lauren, drawing her into his side. “Hear that? We caught it. You did great, Lauren. Don't let her voice stay in your head.”
May you like
It took three hours for the fluids to finish and Noah’s oxygen levels to stabilize. By the time they were discharged with a prescription for antibiotics and a rented nebulizer machine, it was past 1:00 AM.
As they walked out to the truck, the cold Iowa wind bit at them. Lauren clung to Ethan's arm. The immediate medical crisis was under control, but both of them knew that a storm of a different kind was brewing within the Miller family. And this time, Ethan wasn't going to run from it.
