Chapter 7: The Ambush

Two days passed in blissful, quiet recovery. Noah was finally back to his smiling, energetic self, chasing the family dog around the living room. Lauren looked like she had finally slept for a week straight.

On Wednesday at 2:00 PM, while Ethan was at a local job site checking on a commercial build, the doorbell rang.

Lauren walked to the door, assuming it was a package delivery. She opened it, and her heart dropped into her stomach.

Patricia stood on the porch. She wasn't wearing her usual arrogant smirk; instead, she looked desperate, her eyes red-rimmed. But Lauren knew her mother-in-law well enough to know that desperation was just another weapon in her arsenal.

“Lauren,” Patricia said, her voice cracking with forced emotion. “Please. Can I come in? We need to talk. Women to women.”

Lauren felt the familiar pang of anxiety clawing at her throat. Her old instinct was to let her in, to smooth things over, to avoid a scene. But then she looked back into the living room and saw Noah playing happily. She remembered the terrifying sound of his breathless cough. She remembered Ethan standing like a shield in front of her.

Lauren took a deep breath, planting her feet firmly on the threshold. She didn't open the screen door.

“No, Patricia,” Lauren said, her voice surprisingly steady. “You cannot come in.”

Patricia’s face tightened, the mask slipping for a fraction of a second. “Lauren, don't be unreasonable. Ethan is completely out of his mind. He’s ruining this family because of his temper. You know how he gets. You need to talk to him. Tell him to lift this ridiculous ban.”

Lauren looked directly into the eyes of the woman who had terrorized her self-esteem for years. “Ethan didn't lose his temper, Patricia. He found his spine. And for the first time in three years, I feel completely safe in my own home. You sat on that stool and watched me cry while my son choked on his own fluids. You don't get to come into my house ever again until you learn what respect means.”

Patricia gasped, stepping back. “You ungrateful little—”

“Have a nice day, Patricia,” Lauren said cleanly. And with a smooth, decisive motion, she shut the heavy oak door and locked it.

She leaned her back against the door, a massive, triumphant smile breaking across her face. She had finally stood her ground.
