Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Dark

The document arrived via secure portal seconds later. I signed it.

"Authorization received," Rachel confirmed. "The freeze takes effect in five minutes. I’m forwarding the preliminary file to our legal compliance team. Sarah... this carries severe criminal implications."

"I know."

As I hung up, a soft knock came at the door. It was my thirteen-year-old daughter, Chloe, wearing her pajamas.

"Mom? Why are your clothes stained?"

"Just an accident with a wine glass, sweetie."

"I heard Dad shouting at you earlier," she said softly, stepping into the room. "Mom... Miss Natalie came into my room this afternoon."

My heart stopped. "What was she doing in your room?"

"She was looking for a box. She said Dad gave her permission to grab it from your closet."

"Which box, Chloe?"

"The blue lockbox where you keep your important papers."

I rushed to my closet and pulled open the storage shelf. The blue box was gone. It held my duplicate operating agreements, the original deeds to my grandmother’s farm, my bank guarantee papers, and several signed personal notes Thomas had executed when we first launched the firm.

"Did you see where she took it?"

"To Dad's study."

I held my daughter’s hands tightly. "Listen to me, Chloe. I want you to go back to your room, stay with Parker, and lock the door."

"Are you and Dad getting a divorce?" she asked, her voice trembling.

I couldn't lie to her. "I don't know yet, sweetie."

Chloe looked down. "Dad told me last week that you’ve been really stressed and confused lately because you don't work in an office anymore... that you imagine things."

Her words cut deeper than any public humiliation. Thomas had been actively attempting to gaslight my own children into believing I was losing my mind.

"Look at me," I said firmly. "You never have to choose between us. And I will never use your feelings as a weapon."

After tucking her back in, I walked down to Thomas's private study. The door was locked.

I walked back down to the grand dining room. The presentation had wrapped up, and guests were mingling over champagne. Thomas stood near the fireplace, holding a glass alongside Natalie.

"There you are," Thomas said smoothly as I approached. "I assumed you had locked yourself upstairs for the night."

"I need the key to your study, Thomas."

His smile faltered. "Not now, Sarah."

"Natalie took a lockbox from my private closet today."

Natalie set her glass down, her expression going cold. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Chloe saw you."

Thomas grabbed my arm, forcing a tight, polite laugh for the remaining guests. "Step into the kitchen with me. Now."

"Let go of my arm."

"We are not doing this in front of investors."

"You introduced me as the household help in front of everyone, Thomas. You broke the social contract first."

Several venture capitalists turned to look at us. Thomas dragged me into the hallway, his face dark with fury. "You are completely out of control!"

"I want my papers back."

"Those are corporate documents!"

May you like

"They are personal property deeds!"

He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "If you keep acting this unstable, Sarah, I am going to have to seriously evaluate whether you are mentally fit to have custody of our children."
