Chapter 8 - The House of Cards Collapses

The threat hung in the air, cold and calculated. This wasn't a sudden outburst of anger—this was a pre-meditated narrative he had been building for months.

"Are you threatening to take my children from me?"

"I’m saying your recent psychological state is becoming a major concern for this family."

Natalie watched us from the doorway, a look of quiet satisfaction on her face.

Suddenly, Thomas's phone buzzed aggressively. Then Natalie's phone chimed.

Natalie pulled up her banking app, her brow furrowing. "Thomas... my vendor payment just got declined."

Thomas answered his ringing phone. "What do you mean the corporate card is declined? Try it again. It's an unlimited credit line!"

He looked at me, panic finally piercing his arrogant composure.

I kept my voice perfectly level. "You might want to take that call in private, Thomas. The bank compliance officer is very thorough."

Thomas tried to play off the banking issue as a minor technical glitch, but with every passing minute, the situation degraded. Corporate cards failed. Digital account access yielded error codes. A international wire transfer was flagged and halted.

Within twenty minutes, the last confused investor had excused themselves and left the estate.

The moment the front door closed, Thomas whirled around to face me. "What did you do?!"

"I executed my rights as primary guarantor to request an emergency account freeze."

"By what authority?!"

"By the authority granted to me in the signed credit oversight agreement you’ve been pretending doesn't exist."

Natalie stepped forward, her composure breaking. "You can't freeze a multi-million-dollar company's accounts over a marital dispute!"

"I didn't freeze it over a marital dispute," I replied coldly. "I froze it because four hundred and thirty-eight thousand dollars was illegally siphoned from Aranda Solutions into NV Strategy & Consulting."

Natalie went pale. Thomas took a second too long to respond. "Those are... legitimate consulting retainers."

"To an LLC created seven months ago by your mistress?"

"Natalie is not my mistress!"

I looked directly at the diamond necklace still sitting on the side table. "Then it’s going to be very difficult for you to explain to a board of directors why you gave her my mother’s jewelry, my clothes, and nearly half a million dollars of corporate funds."

"I'm leaving," Natalie snapped, grabbing her coat.

"You're not going anywhere until I get my lockbox," I said.

Thomas pulled a key from his pocket and marched toward his study. We followed him inside.

The blue lockbox sat open on his desk. Beside it lay an envelope from a private medical clinic, notarized personal affidavits, and a lease agreement for a luxury penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago.

I picked up the lease. The tenant listed was NV Strategy & Consulting. The monthly rent was seven thousand five hundred dollars.

"Is this where you two have been staying?" I asked.

Natalie crossed her arms. "It’s a corporate entertainment space."

"It has three master suites."

Thomas tried to snatch the paper from my hand. "You have no right to snoop through private corporate correspondence!"

I opened the medical clinic envelope. It contained invoices for elective medical procedures billed directly to a corporate credit card under Natalie’s name.

Beneath those invoices were copies of my confidential therapy records—documents from a counselor I had briefly seen after my father passed away two years ago, detailing my grief, fatigue, and temporary anxiety.

Words like "emotionally vulnerable," "bouts of distress," and "executive exhaustion" had been highlighted with a yellow marker.

"Why do you have my private medical records, Thomas?"

Thomas didn't answer.

"These are protected health records. How did you get them?"

May you like

"I was concerned about your mental health," he stammered, trying to regain the upper hand. "I needed to be prepared."

"Prepared for what? Prepared to frame me as mentally incompetent so you could strip me of my rights, my asset guarantees, and my children?"
