Chapter 5: What Remains

Months later, the house feels different.

Quieter.

Safer.

My mother sits by the window now, sunlight on her face. She doesn’t flinch at footsteps anymore.

Lina doesn’t wear a uniform.

She doesn’t have to.

She’s family.

I made sure of that.

One evening, I handed her something.

A small envelope.

She looked confused.

“What is this?”

“A new beginning,” I said.

Inside was a contract.

Ownership.

A share in everything.

Because some debts can’t be repaid with money.

But they should still be honored.

She shook her head, tears in her eyes.

“I only did what was right.”

I smiled.

“And that’s exactly why you deserve it.”

Later that night, I sat alone in my study.

The cameras were gone.

I didn’t need them anymore.

Because I learned something I’ll never forget:

Evil doesn’t always come from strangers.

Sometimes it smiles at you.

Lives with you.

Calls you “love.”

But so does courage.

So does loyalty.

So does sacrifice.

And in the end…

Those are the things that survive.

Not the lies.

Not the fear.

Not the pain.

May you like

Just the truth.

And the people who were brave enough to stand for it.
