PART 3: The Gathering Storm

The emergency room was brightly lit and smelled heavily of antiseptic. The sterile environment brought a strange sense of comfort compared to the suffocating atmosphere of our home. The doctor, a kind-hearted woman named Dr. Aris, ran a series of ultrasounds and checks on Anna.

"Her blood pressure is dangerously high, Leo," Dr. Aris said, looking at me with a serious expression. "And her body temperature is low from the cold water and shock. The baby is stable for now, but stress like this can trigger premature labor. She needs absolute peace. No stress. No excitement."

I sat by Anna's bedside, holding her hand, kissing the knuckles that were still red from the scrubbing. "She will have nothing but peace from now on, Doctor. I promise."

When Dr. Aris left the room, Anna looked at me, her eyes hollow. "She won't stop, Leo. You don't know what she whispered to me before you came down. She said... she said she would make sure I never hold this baby."

A chill ran down my spine, but I forced a reassuring smile. "She can't touch you anymore, Anna. I’ve changed the codes to the house security system from my phone already. Tomorrow, I’m changing the physical locks. She doesn't have power over us."

But I was naive. Eleanor’s power didn't lie in physical entry; it lay in her deep-rooted manipulation of everyone around us.

By 7:00 AM, while Anna was finally sleeping soundly under the influence of a mild, pregnancy-safe sedative, my phone began to vibrate incessantly. It wasn't Eleanor. It was my older brother, Marcus, calling from Chicago.

I stepped out into the hospital hallway and answered. "Marcus."

"Leo, what the hell is wrong with you?" Marcus’s voice boomed through the receiver, laced with anger. "Mother called me crying hysterically. She’s at a hotel! She said you put your hands on her, shook her, and threw her out into the dark like a dog! Over a dispute about dishes? Have you lost your mind?"

I took a deep breath, feeling the familiar weight of my family’s distorted reality trying to crush me. "Marcus, did she tell you she was dragging Anna by her hair? Did she tell you she was forcing a nine-months-pregnant woman to wash dishes in ice-cold water at three in the morning while whispering threats into her ear?"

Silence stretched over the line for a long three seconds. Then, Marcus scoffed. "Mother can be harsh, Leo, we know this. She’s old-school. She probably just lost her temper because Anna was being disrespectful. But to throw her out? To threaten her with the police? She raised us!"

"She is a monster, Marcus," I said, my voice hardening. "And if you defend her, you can stay out of my life too. I am protecting my wife and my unborn child. Choose your next words very carefully."

"You're being brainwashed by that girl," Marcus said coldly. "Mother warned us this would happen. You’re cutting off your own blood. Don't expect any help from the family business anymore, Leo. Father's trust fund has stipulations, and Mother still controls the board."

"Keep the money," I said, and hung up.

I stood in the corridor, staring at the blank screen of my phone. The battle lines were drawn. Eleanor had already begun spinning her web, turning my own family against me. I wasn't just fighting my mother anymore; I was fighting an entire empire built on her lies.
