PART 7: Into the Light

The drive to the hospital was a nightmare of blinding rain and hydroplaning tires. I held Anna’s hand with one hand while gripping the steering wheel with the other. She was in active labor, but it was three weeks early, brought on by the terror of Marcus’s attack.

"Hold on, love, please hold on," I pleaded, tears blurring my vision.

We burst through the hospital doors, and the medical staff immediately rushed Anna into the delivery room. Dr. Aris was already there, having been alerted by my emergency call.

"Leo, her blood pressure is skyrocketing. This is preeclampsia," Dr. Aris said, her tone urgent as she pushed me toward the scrub room. "We need to do an emergency C-section right now to save both her and the baby. Change quickly."

The next hour was a blur of bright lights, the beep of monitors, and the terrifying silence of anticipation. I stood by Anna's head, whispering words of love and encouragement, wiping the sweat and tears from her face. She was exhausted, her body fighting against the immense strain.

"Don't let them take him, Leo," she whispered, her eyes fluttering shut. "Promise me."

"I promise, Anna. No one will ever touch him."

Suddenly, a sharp, loud cry pierced the sterile air of the operating room.

Dr. Aris smiled beneath her mask, lifting a small, squirming, beautiful baby boy. "He’s here, Leo. He’s healthy. Eight pounds, perfectly formed."

Tears streamed down my face as the nurse cleaned him and placed him gently on Anna’s chest. The moment the baby touched his mother's skin, Anna opened her eyes. A profound, beautiful peace washed over her face, wiping away months of suffering in a single second.

"Hi, my sweet boy," Anna whispered, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "Hi, Arthur."

We named him after Anna’s late father—a man of honor and kindness. For a few brief hours, inside that hospital room, the world outside ceased to exist. There was no Eleanor, no Vanguard Holdings, no lawsuits, no malice. There was only us.

But the real world has a way of breaking through even the strongest sanctuaries.

The next morning, while Anna and Arthur were sleeping, David Vance entered the room. His face was grave, holding a tablet in his hand.

"Leo, I’m sorry to disturb you," David said in a low voice. "But you need to see this."

He handed me the tablet. It was a live news broadcast. Federal authorities have just executed a raid on the headquarters of Vanguard Holdings. The screen showed FBI agents carrying boxes of documents out of our family office.

"What happened?" I asked, stunned. "We didn't file the report yet."

"We didn't," David said. "But someone else did. Someone who knew Eleanor was about to ruin them to save herself. Her own CFO flipped on her this morning to get immunity. Eleanor is currently in custody, Leo. She’s been arrested."
