Chapter 1: The Man at the Door

Chapter 1: The Man at the Door

The headlights outside multiplied until the entire front courtyard glowed white.
Adrian frowned.
"I didn't invite anyone."
A second later, every light inside the mansion flickered before the massive front doors opened.
Not with force.
With a key.
Six men in dark suits entered first, each wearing discreet earpieces. Behind them walked an older gentleman in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver hair perfectly combed and his expression unreadable.
"Dad," I whispered.
Richard Ashford looked at me only once.
The moment he saw the blood soaking through my dress, every trace of warmth disappeared from his face.
"I was five minutes too late."
He removed his jacket and gently draped it over my shoulders before speaking again.
"No one touches my daughter."
Adrian laughed nervously.
"I'm afraid you've misunderstood what's happening. This is a private matter between husband and wife."
Richard slowly turned toward him.
"Private?"
He nodded toward one of his security officers.
The man pressed a button on a tablet.
The hidden recorder inside my necklace began playing through the mansion's surround-sound system.
Every insult.
Every threat.
Every crack of the riding crop.
Vanessa's voice echoed through the room.
"Again. She looked at me with disrespect."
Silence followed.
Richard finally spoke.
"Thank you for confessing."
Adrian's face turned white.
"That's illegal."
"No," Richard replied calmly. "What you just heard was legally obtained evidence collected after my daughter became the victim of repeated domestic violence."
Before Adrian could answer, another convoy entered the estate.
This time, they weren't security.
They were federal investigators carrying search warrants.
Richard looked directly into Adrian's terrified eyes.
"You assumed I was a retired accountant."
He smiled without warmth.
"I retired from building one of the largest forensic accounting firms in the country."
"And for the last eight weeks..."
May you like
"...my team has been helping federal authorities investigate you."
For the first time in years, Adrian had nothing to say.
